Jordan: 7-member Syrian family killed in fire

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? A fire in a center for refugees who fled the Syrian civil war killed seven members of a family, a civil defense spokesman said Wednesday, the latest tragedy to befall tens of thousands who escaped the violence in Syria only to face difficult winter conditions in camps across the border in Jordan.

A kerosene heating unit accidentally flipped over, spreading kerosene on the ground and causing a huge blaze, said Col. Fareed Sharaa.

"The fire spread quickly to floor mattresses, where the refugee family was sleeping, killing all its members," Sharaa said in a written statement. He said four others from a different family were hospitalized with burns.

Police said there was no immediate information on the identity of those killed and whether any relatives survived.

Sharaa said the kerosene heaters are used in caravans in the King Hussein Gardens in Ramtha on the border with Syria. The site is a temporary shelter for refugees as their identity is being established before they are moved to a nearby desert camp. Several refugee families share each caravan as sleeping quarters.

The refugees are then moved to the Zaatari camp. It shelters nearly 55,000 Syrians. In recent days they have been battered by a flash flood caused by torrential rains and freezing temperatures in the Mideast's fiercest storm in years.

There are 235,000 other Syrians living outside the camp in cities across Jordan. Some of them share apartments or are being hosted by Jordanian families.

Harry Winston sells jewelry division to Swatch for US$750 million plus debt

Harry Winston Diamond Corp. (TSX:HW) has signed a deal to sell its namesake retail jewelry and watch division in a deal valued at US$1 billion in cash and assumed debt to Switzerland?s Swatch Group.

The Toronto-based diamond miner will be renamed Dominion Diamond Corp. after the deal closes.

?At the time that we purchased the Harry Winston brand, resource investment opportunities for diamonds were rare and expensive following the euphoria of the Canadian diamond discoveries, and the involvement of the large international mining companies,? said Robert Gannicott, Harry Winston?s chief executive.

?Today there is a range of diamond resource opportunities while the value of heritage luxury brands has increased dramatically. This transaction represents a sound return on our original investment.?

Gannicott said the company?s mining business will be well-equipped ?in an environment where cash has become a strategic resource while preserving and expanding our relationship with the downstream diamond business.?

Swatch will pay Harry Winston $750 million and assume $250 million in debt owed by Harry Winston.

Harry Winston shares closed up 63 cents at $14.90 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The Harry Winston brand is named for a celebrity jeweller, mentioned in the enduring song ?Diamonds Are a Girl?s Best Friend? from the 1953 musical Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

Swatch said Harry Winston will complement the prestige segment of the Swiss group, which is one of the world?s biggest makers of watches.

?We are proud and happy to welcome Harry Winston to the Swatch Group family ? diamonds are still a girl?s best friend,? said Swatch chairwoman Nayla Hayek.

RBC Capital Markets analyst Irene Nattel the key question is what will Harry Winston do with the cash from the deal.

?From a mining perspective the transaction is attractive in that it will provide more focus and potentially more capital to enter into the consolidation of the diamond mining sector,? Nattel wrote in a note to clients.

BMO Capital Markets analyst Edward Sterck, who has a $16 target price on Harry Winston, called the deal a positive for the company.

?Harry Winston could look to return cash to shareholders, reduce the debt it has taken on to fund the Ekati acquisition, or look to consolidate further mining assets ? most likely Rio Tinto?s 60 per cent stake in Diavik or its entire diamond division,? Sterck wrote in a note to clients.

?The acquisition of Rio?s diamond division could represent a fascinating opportunity for Harry Winston at the right price, but taking on a number of mining projects for a company which has not historically operated mines could increase the risk profile of the stock pending personnel announcements.?

Included in the deal are 535 employees around the world and a production company in Switzerland.

Swatch makes and sells watches under 19 different brands including Omega, Longines and Tissot as well as has a retail chain under the Tourbillon Boutiques banner.

The mining company had been called Aber Diamond Corp. until it acquired the Harry Winston retail business in two stages in 2004 and 2006.

As Harry Winston Diamond, the company had adopted an integrated strategy that included mining, polishing and retailing of the precious stones.

However, the company has recently moved to increase the mining portion of its business by acquiring BHP Billiton?s diamonds business, including its stake in the Ekati diamond mine in the Northwest Territories for US$500 million in cash.

Under the deal, BHP Billiton?s employees working at Ekati, in Yellowknife and in diamonds marketing in Antwerp, Belgium, will join Harry Winston.

Chicago-based Boeing faced another problem Sunday when a second Japan Airlines plane reported a fuel leak in a Boeing 787 Dreamliner for the second time in a week amid a U.S. safety review of the aircraft.

Narita International Airport outside of Tokyo ssaid JAL reported a 100-liter fuel leak in a 787 during an inspection Sunday. The aircraft reportedly was the same one that had a fuel leak in Boston last week.

Japan?s All Nippon Airways has experienced a fuel leak, a cockpit window crack and a computer malfunctioning in its 787s, causing cancellations of several domestic flights.

The 787 is Boeing?s newest and most high-tech airliner. Japanese airlines are among the top 787 customers.

On Friday, U.S. regulators said the 787 is safe to fly, but they launched a comprehensive review of critical systems in the next-generation airplane.

The review will include the design, manufacture and assembly of critical systems, U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said at a news conference that included Federal Aviation Administrator Michael Huerta.

The review was necessary to reassure the public, airline analysts said. Initially, it?s going to cause unwanted attention, said Richard Aboulafia, vice president of the aerospace and defense consulting firm Teal Group.

?In the long run, its going to reassure because they?re not going to find any fundamental flaws, just things that need tweaking,? he said. ?It?s going to be a manufacturing issue, in which case they need to tweak processes; or system issues, which will also require tweaks, stuff that will require additional work and additional expense.?

?These appear to be isolated incidents,? said John Goglia, a former National Transportation Safety Board member, of the plane?s recent problems.

The review is being done ?to validate the work that we conducted during the certification process,? Huerta said. ?We?re going to work with Boeing to conduct a review. . . . We want to see the entire picture, and we do not want to simply focus on individual events.?

Special emphasis will be put on the electrical systems of the plane, including batteries and power distribution panels; and how the electrical and mechanical systems interact with each other, Huerta said.

He noted tjat the FAA logged 200,000 hours of technical work before certifying the plane, which went into service 15 months ago and was the first all-new commercial airplane to be certified and enter service in 15 years.

?We are confident about the safety of this aircraft, but we?re concerned about these incidents, and we will conduct the review until we?re completely satisfied,? Huerta said.

Among incidents with the plane this week was a fire that ignited Monday in the battery pack of an auxiliary power unit of a Japan Airlines 787 empty of passengers as the plane sat on the tarmac at Boston?s Logan International Airport. Also this week, a fuel leak delayed a flight from Boston to Tokyo of another Japan Airlines 787.

And on Friday, Japan?s All Nippon Airways said a very small amount of oil was discovered leaking from an engine of a 787 flight from southern Japan?s Miyazaki airport to Tokyo. The jet returned to Miyazaki, and after checks found no safety risk, it flew to Tokyo. ANA said that on another flight glass in a cockpit window cracked, and the aircraft was grounded for repairs.

Much is riding on the 787, which was delayed in entering the market for years because of production problems. Boeing has received orders for 848 787s and delivered 50 of the airplanes.

?If the FAA deems the problems are a non-design issue, ? Boeing will be fine,? said Chicago-based Morningstar Inc. aerospace and defense industry analyst Neal Dihora. ?If this is a design issue, it will be more troublesome.?

New study reveals gas that triggers ozone destruction

Scientists at the Universities of York and Leeds have made a significant discovery about the cause of the destruction of ozone over oceans.

They have established that the majority of ozone-depleting iodine oxide observed over the remote ocean comes from a previously unknown marine source. The research team found that the principal source of iodine oxide can be explained by emissions of hypoiodous acid (HOI) a gas not yet considered as being released from the ocean along with a contribution from molecular iodine (I2).

Since the 1970s when methyl iodide (CH3I) was discovered as ubiquitous in the ocean, the presence of iodine in the atmosphere has been understood to arise mainly from emissions of organic compounds from phytoplankton -- microscopic marine plants.

This new research, which is published in Nature Geoscience, builds on an earlier study which showed that reactive iodine, along with bromine, in the atmosphere is responsible for the destruction of vast amounts of ozone around 50 per cent more than predicted by the world's most advanced climate models in the lower atmosphere over the tropical Atlantic Ocean.

The scientists quantified gaseous emissions of inorganic iodine following the reaction of iodide with ozone in a series of laboratory experiments. They showed that the reaction of iodide with ozone leads to the formation of both molecular iodine and hypoiodous acid. Using laboratory models, they show that the reaction of ozone with iodide on the sea surface could account for around 75 per cent of observed iodine oxide levels over the tropical Atlantic Ocean.

Professor Lucy Carpenter, of the Department of Chemistry at York, said: "Our laboratory and modelling studies show that these gases are produced from the reaction of atmospheric ozone with iodide on the sea surface interfacial layer, at a rate which is highly significant for the chemistry of the marine atmosphere.

"Our research reveals an important negative feedback for ozone a sort of self-destruct mechanism. The more ozone there is, the more gaseous halogens are created which destroy it. The research also has implications for the way that radionucleides of iodine in seawater, released into the ocean mainly from nuclear reprocessing facilities, can be re-emitted into the atmosphere."

Professor John Plane, from the University of Leeds' School of Chemistry, said: "This mechanism of iodine release into the atmosphere appears to be particularly important over tropical oceans, where measurements show that there is more iodide in seawater available to react with ozone. The rate of the process also appears to be faster in warmer water. The negative feedback for ozone should therefore be particularly important for removing ozone in the outflows of pollution from major cities in the coastal tropics."

Travelling and Leisure - Cruising Is the New Safari | Travelling On ...

It is known all over the world that if you want to see the world's finest wild life, Africa is the best destination. This has been the trend for decades but what if you are travelling not only for pleasure but leisure, is there an option for you?
Leisure is a period where you are free and you use this time to do something you love that is a hobby. Free time can range from minutes, weeks to months and if travelling is what you love to do during your free time then going on a cruise is the best thing for you. If it is your first time to be going on a cruise do not worry because there are steps that you can follow and if you do you will be just fine.
Decide on your destination
Decide where you want to go and after making up your mind on where you want to go you should decide on which ship you will want to take. Remember cruise ships are not like airplanes in that they can follow different sea routes and can make stopovers at several wonderful islands.
When do you want to go?
Time is money in short the season you take your cruise influences the costs. The high seasons mean many people but do not expect any bargains but if you go during the shoulder period when the cruise companies are pleading with you and shoving bargains on your face, you will save some good money.
Choose your cruise line
Which cruise line makes you comfortable? You should choose a line whose passengers are compatible with your character. Remember you will be together for some months so choose wisely and do not let experience become your best teacher.
How much does it cost?
Get to know all the costs including those of moving to and fro from the main port. Also get to know the cost of the drinks, food and excursions.
Do not wait till the last minute
There are people who like doing things the last minute. Do not wait till the last minute to book because cruise ships usually give their notice early enough and you know what they say about the early bird, it surely catches the worm.
Time is obeyed everywhere
That is right, arrive early because ships have a time table that they adhere to strictly so do not get late the ship will not wait for you. Speaking of time it is also good that you book in advance any services that you will want to enjoy on the ship for instance spa services. This is because there are many people who want the same and without an appointment you might just miss out.
Seek professional advice
Before you go out at sea please seek advice from experts. The expert in this case is your travelling agents before you let them book a cruise ticket for you ensure that they provide you with adequate information and after all is done, go home and start packing because you will be going on a long water safari.

(AP) ? Ted Ligety won a duel with Marcel Hirscher in a World Cup giant slalom Saturday for a career-best fourth victory of the season in his specialty event.

The 28-year-old American skied cleanly in the fast-fading light to take the victory after first-run leader Hirscher of Austria made a mistake on the dark slope. Ligety was second after the first run, but finished 1.15 seconds ahead of runner-up Fritz Dopfer of Germany in a combined time of 2 minutes 28.67 seconds.

"I was definitely gifted it by Hirscher today because he would have beaten me by a good margin," Ligety said. "But I have gifted him a lot of races in the past also. I guess that's ski racing."

Ligety, who earned his 15th career World Cup victory ? all in giant slalom ? is third in the overall standings.

He celebrated with a small punch of his left fist after taking the lead on a course where he had never finished in the top three. He watched Hirscher's run on the giant screen in the finish area.

Hirscher, who won the GS at Val d'Isere, France, where Ligety placed third, led at every check point until losing his racing line a few gates from the finish and placed 16th.

"I took too much risk," said Hirscher, who won the only GS race that Ligety failed to claim this season, at Val d'Isere, France. "For 99 percent of the race, I was extremely fast. It's great to see that I can beat Ligety."

Felix Neureuther of Germany was 1.24 back in third. It was the first time Germany had two men on a World Cup podium outside their country.

"It's a special day for the team," Neureuther said. "Ted is for sure the best GS skier in the last few years and he will be in the next ones."

Dopfer and Neureuther were eighth and ninth fastest, respectively, in the morning and enjoyed better racing conditions than Ligety as the sun slipped behind the mountains.

Hirscher retained his lead in the overall World Cup standings. The defending champion is 26 points ahead of Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway, who placed sixth on Saturday.

Ligety was rewarded for his acrobatic recovery in the morning run when he had skied wide at the top of the steep final slope.

"I made one really big mistake before the pitch right here and was out in the powder," Ligety told The Associated Press after the first leg.

American teammate Robby Kelley scored his first career World Cup points, finishing 23rd, 4.29 behind Ligety.

Six of the 30 second-run starters failed to complete the undulating course, which tests racers' balance on rolling terrain used as cow pastures in the summer.

On a difficult day for home racers, Olympic GS champion Carlo Janka skied out early in the first run. World Cup debutant Elia Zurbriggen, whose father Pirmin was an Olympic and overall World Cup champion in the 1980s, lost a ski and also failed to finish.

Ligety joined an illustrious winner's list at the Adelboden giant slalom, which was one of the first World Cup races to be held in January 1967.

"It's one that all of our ski heroes have won," said Ligety, who follows greats like Jean-Claude Killy, Ingemar Stenmark, Alberto Tomba and Hermann Maier.

After fiscal cliff mess, Wall Street shifts its focus

1 day

After over a month of watching Capitol Hill and Pennsylvania Avenue, Wall Street can get back to what it knows best: Wall Street.

The first full week of earnings season is dominated by the financial sector - big investment banks and commercial banks - just as retail investors, free from the "fiscal cliff" worries, have started to get back into the markets.

Equities have risen in the new year, rallying after the initial resolution of the fiscal cliff in Washington on January 2. The S&P 500 on Friday closed its second straight week of gains, leaving it just fractionally off a five-year closing high hit on Thursday.

An array of financial companies - including Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase - will report on Wednesday. Bank of America?and Citigroup will join on Thursday.

"The banks have a read on the economy, on the health of consumers, on the health of demand," said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial in Newark, New Jersey.

"What we're looking for is demand. Demand from small business owners, from consumers."

Earnings and economic expectations?

Investors were greeted with a slightly better-than-anticipated first week of earnings, but expectations were low and just a few companies reported results.

Fourth quarter earnings and revenues for S&P 500 companies are both expected to have grown by 1.9 percent in the past quarter.

Few large corporations have reported, with Wells Fargo the first bank out of the gate on Friday, posting a record profit. The bank, however, made fewer mortgage loans than in the third quarter and its shares were down 0.8 percent for the day.

The KBW bank index, a gauge of U.S. bank stocks, is up about 30 percent from a low hit in June, rising in six of the last eight months, including January.

Investors will continue to watch earnings on Friday, as General Electric will round out the week after Intel's?report on Thursday.

Housing, industrial data on tap?

Next week will also feature the release of a wide range of economic data.

Tuesday will see the release of retail sales numbers and the Empire State manufacturing index, followed by CPI data on Wednesday.

Investors and analysts will also focus on the housing starts numbers and the Philadelphia Federal Reserve factory activity index on Thursday. The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment numbers are due on Friday.

Jim Paulsen, chief investment officer at Wells Capital Management in Minneapolis, said he expected to see housing numbers continue to climb.

"They won't be that surprising if they're good, they'll be rather eye-catching if they're not good," he said. "The underlying drive of the markets, I think, is economic data. That's been the catalyst."

Political?anxiety

Worries about the protracted fiscal cliff negotiations drove the markets in the weeks before the ultimate January 2 resolution, but fear of the debt ceiling fight has yet to command investors' attention to the same extent.

The agreement was likely part of the reason for a rebound in flows to stocks. U.S.-based stock mutual funds gained $7.53 billion after the cliff resolution in the week ending January 9, the most in a week since May 2001, according to Thomson Reuters' Lipper.

Markets are unlikely to move on debt ceiling news unless prominent lawmakers signal that they are taking a surprising position in the debate.

The deal in Washington to avert the cliff set up another debt battle, which will play out in coming months alongside spending debates. But this alarm has been sounded before.

"The market will turn the corner on it when the debate heats up," Prudential Financial's Krosby said.

The CBOE Volatility index, a gauge of traders' anxiety, is off more than 25 percent so far this month and it recently hit its lowest since June 2007, before the recession began.

"The market doesn't react to the same news twice. It will have to be more brutal than the fiscal cliff," Krosby said. "The market has been conditioned that, at the end, they come up with an agreement."

Detroit auto show to highlight cool design, high tech

12 hrs.

Detroit isn?t your typical winter destination ? but you could find it difficult to get a flight into the Motor City or line up a hotel room anywhere near downtown in the coming days.? As many as 10,000 journalists and automotive media are expected to flood into the city for the annual Detroit Motor Show.

More formally known as the 2013 North American International Auto Show, the annual gathering is considered one of the industry?s most important and closely watched event, and for good reason. According to sponsors, as many as 60 new cars, trucks, concepts and crossovers will be revealed in the coming days while many of the industry?s top executives subject themselves to a media grilling that could reveal automotive trends and strategies for the rest of the decade.

?The market is more competitive than ever and this is a show that will give us a good look at how the industry is changing,? explains Rod Alberts, executive director of the Detroit Automobile Dealers Association, the show?s organizer.?

The Detroit Bureau:?Nissan Resonance Concept Reveals Next-Gen Murano Crossover

Ford, meanwhile, is rumored to be preparing a sneak peek at its next-generation F-Series truck, hoping to take a little steam out of the Silverado ?reveal.? While the second-largest of the domestic makers won?t confirm that speculation it does acknowledge plans to show off the MKC, a compact crossover that could be critical to the long-term viability of its Lincoln luxury brand. As one might expect, domestic makers will have plenty to show and tell during the NAIAS media days, starting with the much-anticipated unveiling of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette ? the C7 to insiders and aficionados ? on Sunday night.? Chevy will also provide the first public showing of its all-new Silverado pickup.?

Chrysler, meanwhile, has an assortment of products on tap, including an array of Jeeps, such as the replacement for the compact Compass and Patriot models, along with an update of the popular Grand Cherokee.?

The Detroit Bureau:?Hyundai's HCD-14 Show Car is a "Hint" of Next Genesis Luxury Sedan

The fact that it?s tweaking the bigger Jeep flagship underscores one of the significant trends reshaping the automotive market.? In decades past, makers might have gone anywhere from five to eight years before making major changes to the typical model.? Competition is so fierce, stress industry analysts, that even a strong-selling product like the Grand Cherokee has to have frequent updates.

And while design changes are still eye-catchers, more and more of what makers talk about at a car show like Detroit focuses on technology.? Indeed, some of the most significant news the industry will make this month won?t be announced in Detroit but, rather, in Las Vegas, at the Consumer Electronics Show, where more than a dozen carmakers showed off their latest in infotainment systems and even a few prototypes of autonomous vehicles that can drive largely on their own.

?Our focus is to enhance the driving experience? with technology that can also improve safety, explained Julius Marchwicki, a senior manager on Ford?s Sync infotainment system.

While Detroit?s Cobo Center may be less than a half mile from General Motors? Renaissance Center headquarters, NAIAS organizers have worked hard to ensure it remains a truly global car show since it adopted the ?International? designation two decades ago.?

The Detroit Bureau:?Leaked Renderings Offer Sneak Peek at New C7 Corvette

In fact, the most significant debut that year was the launch of two new Japanese luxury brands, Toyota?s Lexus and Nissan?s Infiniti. And both will be back and hoping to make major news this year, as well.? The former marque will reveal its redesigned entry-lux sedan, the 2014 Lexus IS, and Infiniti will not only roll out the replacement for its G-Series sedan but introduce buyers to an all-new alphanumeric naming strategy, the 2014 model to be known as the new G50.

Industry watchers contend that major car shows like Detroit?s have a direct impact on potential buyers, near and far.? And with the U.S. auto industry finally recovering after the worst depression it has suffered in more than half a century, a blitz of new product could deliver some welcome momentum, according to Joe Phillippi, of AutoTrends Consulting.

Of course, that?s something that auto shows have aimed to deliver since the first one was held in New York City more than a century ago.? Back then, show-goers were given a variety of powertrain options , about a third of the vehicles on display driven by steam, a third by batteries and the rest by gasoline. The abundance of petroleum eventually led gas power dominate but as the 2013 NAIAS will make clear, things are up in the air again.

There?ll be plenty of alternative models making their debut, including the Cadillac ELR, a luxury spin-off of the more mainstream Chevrolet Volt plug-in.? Nissan, meanwhile, plans to pull the covers off its Resonance Concept, a hybrid-powered crossover.

The Resonance reveals another significant trend one can spot at Detroit?s Cobo Center next week.? Since the legendary General Motors design chief Harley Earl crafted the Buick Y-Job ? generally considered the first true show car ? in 1938, concept vehicles have become an essential part of the auto show allure.

Long-time showgoers will likely recall some of the wild and wacky concept vehicles of the past, which former Ford design director Jack Telnack liked to call ?fantasies in chrome.?

These days, however, the fantasies have been toned down and it?s become much more a case of ?what you see is what you get.?? Even though competition is tougher than ever, automakers are more likely to use concept vehicles as a way to signal what?s really coming ? and gauge public reaction.

The Nissan Resonance, for one, will reappear with relatively minor changes, in 2014 as the next-generation Murano CUV.

One of the challenges for organizers of major auto shows, like the NAIAS, is to keep them relevant. Detroit?s event now includes a special, limited-access gathering called the Gallery, where some of the most exclusive products, like the new Bentley Continental GT Speed, are put on display.

The 1-day gala is limited to AmEx Centurion ? or ?black card? ? and Platinum customers and a select group of other invitees, ?folks who can readily afford to buy anything on display,? according to the DADA?s Ash Caza.

One other significant addition to the Detroit show will return for 2013, giving show-goers the opportunity to test drive the latest battery cars and plug-in hybrids. But considering the extreme weather possible for mid-January in Detroit, organizers have found a novel way to sidestep the worst Mother Nature might deliver, running the test drives in the massive basement of Cobo Center.

Iraq Threatens to Seize Oil Shipments, Sue Dealers

Iraq is threatening to seize oil exports made without its consent and sue companies dealing in what it sees as contraband crude just days after the country's self-rule Kurdish region began unilaterally exporting oil.

A spokesman for Iraq's Kurdish region confirmed Friday that the largely autonomous territory has begun shipping oil to Turkey in the past few days. Safeen Dizayee declined to say how much was being hauled into Turkey by truck, but said it is "more than a few tankers a day."

The move appears to have triggered Baghdad's threat. A statement quietly posted Thursday on the website of the State Oil Marketing Organization warns that Iraq may confiscate what it sees as contraband oil cargoes and sue sellers, buyers and companies that transport the crude.

US unemployment aid applications tick up to 371K

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Weekly applications for U.S. unemployment benefits ticked up slightly last week, the latest sign of slow but consistent gains in the job market.

The Labor Department said Thursday that applications rose 4,000 to a seasonally adjusted 371,000, the most in five weeks. The previous week's total was revised lower.

The four-week average, a less volatile measure, increased 6,750 to 365,750. It had fallen to a four-year low the previous week.

A department spokesman says all states reported data and none were estimated. In the previous two weeks, the department relied heavily on estimates because many states weren't able to report data over the holidays.

The figures "continue to suggest steady but modest U.S. employment gains," Robert Kavcic, senior economist at BMO Capital Markets, said in a note to clients. "That said, claims stubbornly refuse to break below the ... range that has been in place for the past year."

Weekly applications are a proxy for layoffs. They have fluctuated for most of the past 12 months between 360,000 and 390,000. At the same time, job growth has been stable.

Employers added 155,000 jobs in December, the department said last week, while the unemployment rate remained 7.8 percent. The gain in hiring nearly matched the average of 153,000 jobs per month in 2011 and 2012. That's just been enough to slowly push down the unemployment rate, which fell 0.7 percentage points in 2012.

December's steady job gain suggests employers didn't cut back on hiring in the midst of the debate over the tax and spending changes known as the fiscal cliff. Many economists feared that the prospect of higher taxes and steep cuts in federal spending would cause a slowdown in job gains.

That's a good sign, since more budget showdowns are expected. Congress must vote to raise the government's $16.4 trillion borrowing limit by around late February. If not, the government risks defaulting on its debt. Republicans will likely demand deep spending cuts as the price of raising the debt limit.

The number of people continuing to receive unemployment aid dropped to 5.36 million in the week ended Dec. 22, the most recent data available. That's down about 50,000 from the previous week.

Still, hiring is too weak to rapidly reduce the number of unemployed, which stands at 12.2 million. That's far higher than the 7.6 million who were out of work when the Great Recession began in December 2007.

There are signs the economy is improving. The once-battered housing market is recovering, which should lead to more construction jobs in the coming months. A gauge of U.S. service firms' business activity expanded in December by the most in nearly a year. Auto sales for 2012 were the best in five years. And Americans spent more at the end of the crucial holiday shopping season.

CSN: Some Hall of Famers applaud vote results

CSNNE.com STAFF REPORT
FOLLOW ON TWITTER @CSNNE

If you're a Hall of Famer, odds are you agreed with the results of this year's Hall of Fame voting, in which no one on the ballot -- choked with stars of the Steroids Era -- was elected.

"Wow!" wrote Dennis Eckersley in a Tweet. "Baseball writers make a statement@Baseballhall. Feels right."

"Curt Schilling made a good point, everyone was guilty," Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt said in an email to The Associated Press. "Either you used PEDs, or you did nothing to stop their use. This generation got rich. Seems there was a price to pay."

And if you have an association with one of the snubbed nominees, well . . .

"It is unimaginable that the best player to ever play the game would not be a unanimous first-ballot selection," said Jeff Borris of the Beverly Hills Sports Council, Barry Bonds' longtime agent.

But commissioner Bud Selig doesn't think any long-term damage was done to the Hall, or the process, with this year's shutout.

"Next year, I think you'll have a rather large class and this year, for whatever reasons, you had a couple of guys come really close," Selig said at the owners' meetings in Paradise Valley, Ariz. "This is not to be voted to make sure that somebody gets in every year. It's to be voted on to make sure that they're deserving. I respect the writers as well as the Hall itself.

"This idea that this somehow diminishes the Hall of baseball is just ridiculous in my opinion."

Hasbro aims to jazz up Monopoly with new token

(AP) ? The gig is almost up for one of the eight Monopoly tokens. But which will it be? Iron? Thimble? Top Hat?

Or another of their board game buddies?

Hasbro is holding a Facebook contest to eliminate one of the eight tokens that identify the players and introduce a new one. Possible new tokens include a cat, diamond ring, guitar, toy robot and helicopter

It's the latest effort by the toymaker to jazz up the game which debuted almost eight decades ago.

In recent years, Hasbro Inc. introduced a version that replaces paper money with an electronic bank and another that incorporates an iPad. There is an app-only version of the game for smartphones and tablets.

Monopoly's tokens have actually changed quite a lot over the years. The original version also included a lantern, purse, cannon and a rocking horse. A horse and rider token was used in the 1950s. During World War II, metal tokens were replaced by wooden ones.

But this time, users have a say.

So if you are tired of the iron token and would rather be represented by a robot, here's your chance to make those wishes known. Beginning Tuesday, Facebook fans of monopoly can vote on which piece to eliminate and which one to add. The voting ends Feb. 5.

Up for elimination: all eight current tokens including a battleship, iron, racecar, Scottie dog, shoe, thimble, top hat and wheelbarrow. Most tokens were introduced with the first Parker Brothers iteration of the game in 1935, and the Scottie dog and wheelbarrow were added in the early 1950s.

Eric Nyman, global brand leader for Hasbro gaming, said the impetus for the contest came from chatter on Facebook, where Monopoly has over 10 million fans.

"We're constantly interacting with those fans and we're always getting suggestions from fans about what tokens they would love to see," Nyman said. They took five of the top suggestions from Facebook for the contest.

A special $17.99 limited edition of the game called Golden Ticket will be available in Target stores beginning Feb. 15 with golden versions of both the old and new tokens. It will be the last time all of the classic tokens will be available with the game.

Versions of Monopoly with the new token will come out later this year.

Monopoly's iconic tokens originated when game creator Charles Darrow's niece suggested using charms from a charm bracelet for tokens.

Shares in Hasbro, which is based in Pawtucket, R.I., ended Wednesday up 30 cents at $35.68.

Egypt's president to meet Palestinian rivals on unity

CAIRO/GAZA (Reuters) - Egyptian President Mohammed Mursi plans to meet the leaders of Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah on Wednesday in a renewed effort to help them heal their five-year-old feud, Palestinian and Egyptian officials said.

The officials said Mursi would meet individually with President Mahmoud Abbas of the secular Fatah group and Khaled Meshaal of the Islamist Hamas movement to discuss a stalled reconciliation deal the two agreed in Cairo last year.

Egyptian mediators had hoped to coax them into the same room, but a Palestinian source told Reuters the two will meet later in the evening, without the Egyptian president.

Abbas is reluctant to any format which would imply giving the Hamas leader a status equivalent to his own.

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri downplayed the talks in Cairo, describing them as "exploratory."

"Egyptian officials aim to explore where things stand and look into the best ways to activate reconciliation efforts," he told Reuters.

Mursi, grappling with political and economic difficulties at home, helped broker a ceasefire deal that ended a brief war in November between Israel and Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip.

Leaders of the two groups have been deadlocked over the unity agreement and have traded blame over continued arrests among members in the West Bank, where Abbas holds sway, and in Gaza, which Hamas wrested from Abbas's control in 2007.

On Tuesday, a Hamas court sentenced a senior Fatah armed activist, Zaki al-Sakani, to 15 years in prison for possession of arms, according to Hamas security sources. A Fatah official described the verdict as a blow to reconciliation.

THAW IN RELATIONS

The Palestinian rivals have drawn closer since Israel's assault on Gaza in November, in which Hamas claimed victory, and a diplomatic win by Abbas the same month in which the United Nations voted to recognize Palestine as a "non-member state."

Supporters of the two factions were allowed to hold anniversary rallies in Gaza and the West Bank for the first time since their split, though the celebrations produced no concrete signs of how reconciliation might be implemented.

Last year's Egyptian-drafted agreement called on both sides to form a unity government that would oversee an election and reform the Abbas-led Palestine Liberation Organisation to include Hamas and the less influential Islamic Jihad group.

Abbas says Hamas is obstructing election registration in Gaza, while Meshaal says the pact needs to be implemented as a whole, with Hamas prisoners in West Bank jails released.

A senior Hamas official in Gaza accused Abbas of dragging his feet on reconciliation and slowing its pace because he was still hoping for a renewal of stalled peace talks with Israel.

"Our information showed that President Abbas would head towards reviving negotiations with the occupation (Israel) when the election in Israel is finished," Salah al-Bardaweel said in a statement.

Israel will hold a parliamentary election on January 22.

It has criticized Palestinian unity efforts, fearing grassroots support for Hamas, deemed a terrorist group by the Jewish state and Western governments, could overwhelm Abbas's administration, which has long renounced violence against Israel.

Hani Habib, a political analyst in Gaza, said the Cairo talks, like previous meetings, had little chance of success.

"The talks today were meant to show something regarding reconciliation is happening but there will be nothing new," he said. "Each side has been unable to twist the other's arm and therefore each is happy with the status quo."

London's Boris turns turtle getting yearly scrub down

Douglas Heaven, reporter

rexfeatures_2052266c.jpg

Up a bit... left a bit... a bit more... ah, that's the spot.

Named after his adoptive father, London mayor Boris Johnson, Boris the green turtle doesn't get a tickle from the cleaner every day. The divers above are taking part in Sea Life London Aquarium's annual January "Deep Clean", in which tanks and inhabitants get a good scrub.

Despite being capable of breath-holding dives of over 10 hours - the longest of any vertebrate - green turtles are usually found in shallow lagoons in the warmer parts of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. But every three to four years they swim thousands of kilometres from their regular foraging grounds to remote beaches where they mate and the females lay eggs in holes in the sand. Hatchling turtles then face a desperate race to the relative safety of the sea while birds, crabs and other predators pick off the stragglers.

Those that make it to adulthood have been shown to have an amazing homing ability - possibly guided by smell. Not only do they return to their own birthplace to breed, but they can retrace exact routes across an ocean to favoured feeding sites.

Though some have questioned green turtles' endangered status, sea turtles generally don't have it easy. As well as animal predators, baby turtles must also now contend with changing weather and human interference.

London Aquarium staff hope that Boris junior's new family connection will help raise awareness of their plight. "I hope he's got a thick skin," said Boris (the mayor).

PFT: Ray Lewis showed nerves before farewell

Austin Rivers - First Take - September 19, 2012

Rob Parker, the ESPN commentator who was suspended for 30 says after questioning whether Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is authentically black because he has a white fiancee, says he was surprised by the backlash.

Parker said on Flashpoint on Channel 4 in Detroit that he didn?t expect the reaction he got.

?I can?t believe it, Parker said. I mean, looking back at some of the comments, I can see how some people can take it out of context and run with it, but the response, and what happened over the past 30 days and everything was just shocking,? Parker said.

For Parker to now suggest he was taken out of context is surprising, considering that Parker issued an apology three weeks ago. If Parker were simply taken out of context, he would have nothing to apologize for.

But Parker did apologize, and ESPN has also acknowledged that it was wrong not only to air Parker?s comments but to re-air them on Best of First Take later on the same day that Parker made the comments. The decision to re-air the comments and give them the ?best of? seal of approval was not Parker?s, and Parker indicated that ESPN knew even before the program what he planned to say about Griffin.

Asked if ESPN producers knew what Parker would say about Griffin, Parker answered, ?Yeah, for the most part.?

?I mean, we had a discussion ? a pre-production meeting. Not every single word, but they knew which way we were going and it?s just not off the cuff, obviously,? Parker said.

And it?s the ?embrace debate? format of ESPN First Take that Parker said is the reason the show succeeds. Parker said that such comments on a less popular show wouldn?t have yielded such a big controversy.

?It also shows how big and popular a show First Take is,? Parker said.

So while Parker may not be happy about his suspension, his comments show why ESPN likes the attention.
