Thai anti-government protesters clash with police

BANGKOK (AP) ? Protesters calling for Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to step down rallied in the heart of Bangkok on Saturday, clashing with police in the first major demonstration against the government since it came to power last year.

Organizers had spoken of mobilizing hundreds of thousands of supporters. But only around 10,000 turned up, and by dusk the leaders called the rally off.

Nevertheless, the tense gathering served as a reminder that the simmering political divisions unleashed after the nation's 2006 army coup have not gone away. The coup toppled Yingluck's brother, Thaksin Shinawatra, triggering years of instability and mass-protests that have shaken Bangkok.

Saturday's rally was organized by a royalist group calling itself "Pitak Siam" ? or "Protect Thailand." Led by retired army Gen. Boonlert Kaewprasit, the group accuses Yingluck's administration of corruption, ignoring insults to the monarchy and being a puppet of Thaksin.

Yingluck took the group's threats seriously and accused them of trying to topple her government, which came to power in mid-2011 after winning a landslide electoral victory. Concerned about possible violence, Yingluck deployed nearly 17,000 police and invoked a special security law to give them extra powers.

Although the rally site itself was peaceful, protesters on a nearby street tried to break through a concrete barricade guarded by thick lines of hundreds riot police with shields, at one point ramming a truck into it. Both demonstrators and police hurled tear gas canisters at each other.

Police spokesman Maj. Gen. Piya Utayo said five officers were injured in the skirmishes, two of them seriously. He said 130 demonstrators were detained, some of them carrying knives and bullets. Local hospital staff said they treated 45 people and most had inhaled tear gas.

Speaking from the rally's central stage on Saturday, Boonlert vowed the demonstration would remain peaceful. But he said: "I promise that Pitak Siam will succeed in driving this government out."

He then led the crowd in a chant: "Yingluck, get out! Yingluck, get out!"

The rally was held at Bangkok's Royal Plaza, a public space near Parliament that has been used by protesters in the past.

Police allowed protesters into the site, and two roads leading to it were open. But in an effort to control access, they blocked roads on another street leading to Royal Plaza. Protesters tried to break through the barriers in the morning, cutting through more than half a dozen rings of barbed wire. They clashed with police in the area at least twice on Saturday, and some carried their own tear gas.

While Pitak Siam is a newcomer to Thailand's protest scene, it is linked to the well-known "Yellow Shirt" protesters, whose rallies led to Thaksin's overthrow. The same movement later toppled a Thaksin-allied elected government after occupying and shutting down Bangkok's two airports for a week in 2008.

Thaksin remains an intensively divisive figure in Thai politics. The Yellow Shirts and their allies say he is corrupt and accuse him of seeking to undermine the popular constitutional monarch ? charges Thaksin denies.

On Thursday, Yingluck's Cabinet invoked an Internal Security Act in three Bangkok districts around the protest site. The act allows authorities to close roads, impose curfews and ban use of electronic devices in designated areas.

Since then, police have closed roads around Yingluck's office and Government House, and boosted security at the homes of senior officials, including the prime minister.

In a nationally televised address explaining the move, Yingluck had said protest leaders "seek to overthrow an elected government and democratic rule ... and there is evidence that violence may be used to achieve those ends."

Analysts said they did not view the protest as an immediate threat to Yingluck's government, but were watching it closely.

"Anytime you have tens of thousands of people converging, assembling in a central Bangkok location, it becomes a government stability concern," said Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a political scientist at Bangkok's Chulalongkorn University.

But he added: "I think it's a serious concern more than a serious threat."

Boonlert, the protest group's leader, is best known for his role as president of the Thailand Boxing Association. His name is unfamiliar in the anti-Thaksin protest movement, but his message appears to have resonated with Yellow Shirt supporters who have laid low in recent years after Yingluck's party won the last elections.

Thailand has been gripped by bouts of political instability since 2006, with Thaksin's supporters and opponents taking turns to spar over who has the right to rule the country.

The most violent episode came in 2010, when Thaksin's "Red Shirt" supporters led a two-month occupation of central Bangkok to demand the resignation of an anti-Thaksin government. The protests led to a military crackdown that left at least 91 people dead and more than 1,700 injured.

Thaksin has lived in self-imposed exile since 2008, when he jumped bail to evade a corruption conviction and two-year jail term. He retains huge popularity among the rural poor, who want to see him pardoned and returned to power. But he is reviled by the urban elite and educated middle class, who see him as authoritarian and a threat to the monarchy.

Buoyed by Thaksin's political machine, Yingluck was elected by a landslide victory in August 2011. She initially was criticized for her lack of political experience ? she was an executive in Shinawatra family businesses ? but has won praise for leading the country through one of its longest peaceful periods in recent years.

The Mistle Tones comes to town on ABC Familys 25 Days of Christmas

The Mistle-Tones?Premieres Sunday, December 9 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT)

In ?The Mistle-Tones,? Holly (Tia Mowry), blessed with an amazing singing voice, is all set to audition for the newly vacated spot in a legendary local Christmas group which was founded by her late mother years ago. Shocked and upset when the slot goes to the barely talented best friend of the group?s leader, Marci (Tori Spelling), Holly sets out to create her own musical group, The Mistle-Tones. After challenging their rivals to a sing-off on Christmas Eve, Holly finds herself on a journey to the real meaning of Christmas?with some new friends and a new love thrown in for good measure. The film also stars Jonathan Patrick Moore, Reginald VelJohnson, Tammy Townsend, Andy Gala, Megan Kathleen Duffy, and Jason Rogel. ?The Mistle-Tones? is executive produced by Maggie Malina (?Single Ladies?), from a script by Jed Elinoff & Scott Thomas (?My Super Psycho Sweet 16?), and directed by Paul Hoen (?Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam?).

I love a good christmas movie and this might just be it! Having two amazingly talented actresses as the leads is a brilliant idea from Disney. We have Tia Mowry a Disney veteran and Tori Spelling who we all know from a certain zip code. Both are greatly talented and veterans to the buisness which I?m sure will show when we get to see the movie Sunday Dec.9 . Coming with it?s own soundtrack is a lovely idea as i can?t wait to hear their christmas tunes! I also can?t wait to see the little rivalry brewing between Holly (clever name) and Marci there?s sure to be some tinsel flying when these two get into it!

To make the holiday a little brighter, ABC Family will release an accompanying ?The Mistle-Tones? movie soundtrack on Sunday, November 18. Featuring nine songs from the movie sung by the cast, the soundtrack will be available exclusively on Itunes.

Part of the Disney/ABC Television Group, ABC Family is distributed in over 97 million homes. ABC Family features programming reflecting today?s families, entertaining and connecting with adults through relatable programming about today?s relationships ? told with a mix of diversity, passion, humor and heart.

Analysts Predict Reversal of U.S. Video Games Sales Slump - The ...

?

U.S. video game industry sales have been sliding all year with double-digit declines in games and total industry sales.

The sector has been hit by lower purchases of packaged console games, which can cost as much as $60 each. Continued gains in mobile and other digital games have not quite offset the drop in the traditional business.

The declines this year continue a trend of recent years, but now some analysts predict that the gaming sector could see a trend reversal, which could also boost industry stocks.

"The relentless decline in packaged good software sales, which is now concluding its fourth consecutive year, has been a major determinant of negative investor sentiment around the video game publisher group," said Cowen analyst Doug Creutz?in a report just ahead of the Thanksgiving weekend, which traditionally kicks off the core holiday selling season for games companies.

Several analysts have come out to predict that holiday season games sales could come in roughly unchanged from last year's levels, helped by such big releases as Call of Duty: Black Ops II, which set new records with its first-day sales.

"We expect retailers and vendors to support the category with significant marketing dollars and promotional activity to drive foot traffic and hardware unit sales" starting Friday, known as Black Friday and one of the year's big shopping days in the U.S., said BMO Capital Markets analyst Edward Williams. "Retailer comments from last week suggest that recent launches of key hits have performed well."

Overall, he predicted a "video game reset" starting with the holiday season.

Earlier this month, Liam Callahan, industry analyst at research firm NPD Group, said that "while October was another month of steep declines in retail sales, we are looking forward to November with the results of Assassin?s Creed III, and Halo 4, which were positively reviewed, as well as the results of Call of Duty: Black Ops II. These software titles, along with the Wii U launch on Nov. 18, will provide a much needed boost to retail sales.?

Creutz even believes that the trend of lower or flat sales "will sharply reverse in the first half of 2013 due to a rare combination of favorable factors." He predicts that game software sales will grow in the double-digits percentage range over the first six months of 2013 and potentially even by nearly 50 percent.

"As a result, we think sector sentiment could meaningfully improve early next year, particularly as anticipation grows around potential new Microsoft and Sony console launches," which are not likely to lead gamers to hold off on games purchases until the back-half of 2013, he said.

One new launch, that of Nintendo's Wii U this month, is widely seen as a likely industry boost.

It "will likely reverse the very negative Wii software sales trends that have dogged the industry for the past several years," Creutz said. Year-to-date, Wii software sales are down nearly 50 percent.

Big upcoming games releases will also help. Grand Theft Auto V, the long-awaited new release in the powerhouse franchise, is scheduled for a spring release. "By itself, GTA V is likely to contribute 16 percent to 30 percent to overall year-over-year growth," said Creutz. "However, there are several other big releases scheduled for the first half of 2013, including Gears of War: Judgment, God of War: Ascension?and Bioshock Infinite.

And the 2013 calendar will also contribute to help the gaming sector early in the year. "Due to the vagaries of the retail calendar, the first half of 2013 will also include an extra week of sales, likely adding about four percentage points to the overall growth rate," Creutz said.

Which video gaming stocks do Wall Street analysts recommend? Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter maintained his "outperform" rating, similar to a "buy," on Activision after the strong start for the latest Call of Duty game.

Drew Crum?of Stifel, Nicolaus also emphasized his "buy" rating on the stock.

And Eric Handler?of MKM Partners has a "buy" rating on Activision and a "neutral" on competitor Electronic Arts.

But Williams sees upside for both sector biggies: "In general, we continue to believe that 'outperform'-rated Activision and Electronic Arts are well positioned for the long term."
