Panasonic has plans for a 4k OLED too

Sony upstaged most during its press event last night by announcing a Ultra HD 56-inch OLED, but if you thought there wouldn't be competitors, you're mistaken. At the CES day one opening Keynote, Panasonic showed off its very thin (about a half inch thick) 56-inch Ultra HDTV OLED. Like Sony's there's no price or availability, but we suspect it'll still fall into the, if-you-have-to-ask category.

Emma Stone And Ryan Gosling Goof Around In 'Gangster Squad' Featurette

Anyone who saw the under-appreciated "Crazy Stupid Love" can atttest to the power that is the on-screen duo of Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. Sudden, massive outburst in neighbor galaxy surprises astronomers

Jan. 7, 2013 ? The surprising discovery of a massive outburst in a neighboring galaxy is giving astronomers a tantalizing look at what likely is a powerful belch by a gorging black hole at the galaxy's center. The scientists were conducting a long-term study of molecules in galaxies, when one of the galaxies showed a dramatic change.

"The discovery was entirely serendipitous. Our observations were spread over a few years, and when we looked at them, we found that one galaxy had changed over that time from being placid and quiescent, to undergoing a hugely energetic outburst at the end," said Robert Minchin, of Arecibo Observatory, who presented the research.

The scientists were using the National Science Foundation's (NSF) 305-meter William E. Gordon Telescope at Arecibo for their study when they discovered the outburst in NGC 660, a spiral galaxy 44 million light-years distant in the constellation Pisces. The outburst was ten times brighter than the largest supernova, or exploding star. They reported their findings at the American Astronomical Society's meeting in Long Beach, California.

After detecting the outburst, the team continued to observe NGC 660 with the Arecibo Telescope, and also sought to determine the cause of the outburst using an international network of telescopes to make a detailed image of the galaxy.

"High-resolution imaging is the key to understanding what's going on," said Emmanuel Momjian, of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO). "We needed to know if the outburst came from a supernova in this galaxy or from the galaxy's core. We could only do that by harnessing the high-resolution imaging power we get by joining widely-separated radio telescopes together."

The astronomers used a network called the High Sensitivity Array (HSA), composed of the NSF's Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), a continent-wide system of ten radio telescopes ranging from Hawaii to the Virgin islands; the Arecibo Telescope; the NSF's 100-meter Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia; and the 100-meter Effelsberg Radio Telescope of the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Germany.

"By adding the large collecting area of the three big dishes to the VLBA, we got the images much more quickly. What we did with the HSA in less than half a day would have taken nearly nine days with the VLBA alone," Momjian said.

The resulting images were more complex than the scientists expected. They thought they would see either the ring of an expanding supernova or a jet of superfast material from the galaxy's core. Instead, they saw five sites of bright radio emission, one near the center of the galaxy and two on either side.

"The most likely explanation is that there are jets coming from the core, but they are precessing, or wobbling, and the hot spots we see are where the jets slammed into material near the galaxy's nucleus," said Chris Salter, of Areceibo Observatory. "To confirm this, we will continue to observe the galaxy with the HSA over the next few years," he added.

If the jet idea is correct, the outburst probably was caused by material pulled into the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy. The material would form a rapidly-spinning disk around the black hole before finally falling into it, and the disk would generate jets of particles blasting outward at nearly the speed of light.

Astronomers are carefully watching a gas cloud in our own Milky Way Galaxy that is expected to fall into our Galaxy's central black hole in the middle of this year.

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory is a facility of the National Science Foundation, operated under cooperative agreement by Associated Universities, Inc. The Arecibo Observatory is operated by SRI International under a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation (AST-1100968), and in alliance with Ana G. Mendez-Universidad Metropolitana, and the Universities Space Research Association.

How to Find the Right Personal Trainer - Columbus Underground

January 2013 has arrived? a new year! It?s time to start making those New Year?s resolutions.?But keeping them is the biggest challenge.?You can make all the New Year?s resolutions you want to make, but if you don?t keep them, it makes no difference. You?ll be in the exact place come 2014, and nobody wants that.

The majority of New Year?s Resolutions are either to lose weight or get in shape, which usually goes hand in hand. But what if you have no clue on how to get in shape or how to eat right??Well, that?s what I am going to help you with.

Choosing the right fitness program or personal trainer can be a very daunting task. There are so many choices. So many different styles of training to choose from. Fortunately, there are some major rules that you should follow when choosing a personal trainer or fitness program in the Columbus area, or any area for that matter.

Here is my list of five things you need to look at (or avoid) when choosing your training program:

1. Focusing on weight loss.

Most people are after weight loss. Saying ?I want to lose ______ amount of pounds.? is a common goal. But the scale can be your enemy.?We want to see healthy weight loss, which means around 2 to 3 pounds per week. Any more then that and you are most likely are losing water and muscle.

A healthy body means a healthy metabolism. With a healthy metabolism and you?ll be a lean, mean fat burning machine. The best way to judge your progress is:

  1. body fat percentage
  2. inches lost
  3. how your clothes fit
  4. how you feel emotionally

Chuck the scale out the window if you can. But if not, weigh yourself no more then once per week. And never right when you wake up.

2. Nutrition

Nutrition is probably the most important factor when it comes changing your body.?Don?t get me wrong, the workouts are important too? but most people mess up with nutrition. It?s not your fault though. We?ve been fed lies from food companies for many decades now, but the truth will set you free.

A trainer should provide educational nutrition information. Our clients receive a nutritional eBook, CD, DVD, and five-part email sequence educating about the A-Z?s in nutrition. All information should come from a nutritionally certified professional and registered dietician.

Here is something that might shock you: you need to eat to lose weight and get the body of your dreams.?And by eating, I mean eating what your body requires to maintain a fast metabolism.

Low calorie diets (1200 calories or less) will destroy your metabolism and do a lot of other damage to your vital organs. More then likely you will lose a whole lot of weight eating this way, but it will eventually stop and the weight will come back on. And usually it will be more weight then when you started. If a trainer recommends a low calorie diet, walk away.

How much you need to eat is different for everyone. It depends on a number of factors including your current weight, height, gender, activity level and type of job you have. What you need to do is figure out your BMR ? Basal Metabolic Rate.

Once you have this, then you know where to start. And you can start planning your nutrition out.

3. Goals

Most New Year?s Resolutions are not goals. They are dreams.

?I want to lose weight?
?I want to quit smoking?
?I want to learn to speak a new language?

The list goes on. How much weight do you want to lose and by when? How are you going to do this? What little steps are you going to take to get there?

Goals are dreams with a deadline.

The way I have my clients set up their goals is to have them establish their goals and set an action plan to get there.?Does the trainer you are looking at offer a goal assessment??If not, walk away.?If they do, it should be free and should be completed before you start or very shortly after you start training with them.

Otherwise, if you are just training to train, and eating to eat, and have no roadmap for where you want to go ? you simply are not going to get there.?This is a huge mistake that a lot of trainers make and a lot of people who start working out make.

4. Workouts

Working out is the bread and butter of a fitness program.

The workouts should be hard.?Intensity is the number one factor when it comes to whether or not a workout program will produce results.?But understand that it should also be scalable. If a trainer has a workout or class where an advanced fitness trainee is involved and also a beginner trainee is involved, there should be progressions and regressions for each person.

If you have an injury and can?t do a certain exercise and you ask the trainer for an alternate, he or she should be able to provide that for you.

Another thing to keep in mind about workouts is avoiding boredom. I can turn into the same exact thing every day or every week. If training becomes boring to you, you are not going to want to do it. You?ll start making excuses and eventually quit altogether.

Jason Yun

5. Cardio

If a trainer has you warm-up on a treadmill or another piece of cardio equipment or jog around the building or room, then you need to find another trainer.?If they have you do cardio during the session, you need to find another trainer.

You hired them to train you, and you only have a limited amount of time with them. You need to maximize that time by doing the most effective types of exercise. These include weight training, interval training, complexes and kettlebell training.?These types of training have been shown to be the most effective.

???-

In summary, these are five main things to look at in a trainer, but ?I could go on with a lot more. Good luck with your search and if you have questions please drop me an email at jyun@yunbootcamps.com.

Blogs Linger ? Rochester Web Development - sbucral's posterous

One of the most popular activities that take place on the internet is the use of email, which 92 percent of online adult users do every day. The Pew Internet and American Life Project came up with this statistic showing email use being second only to search. Therefore, it shouldn?t be a surprise that Rochester web development companies focus on providing email hosting along with other important marketing services used for generating success on the web. Identifying quality email hosting services is achieved by understanding what elements should be involved. For example, quality email hosting should involve the tools needed to filter spam and viruses.

It?s important to find Rochester web design companies that offer solutions to filter spam and viruses from email. This information is obtained by asking questions or researching Rochester web development companies online. Rochester web development companies offering email hosting solutions should also offer plenty of customizable configurations and the ability to handle multiple accounts. Custom domain names are also commonly used, especially by internet marketers and online business owners. Most people don?t realize the first email was sent in 1971 on a system known as ARPANET. ARPANET is considered the forerunner of our modern internet today.

During Bill Clinton?s presidency, Bill Clinton sent two emails. One email was considered a test email while the other email was sent to John Glenn, who was aboard the space shuttle at that time. Today, email is an important element for communications and advertisements. People should do their research on Rochester web development companies because not all of them offer quality email hosting programs. Your particular need for email hosting will dictate what type of plan to choose. Some plans are designed to handle a significant amount of email and accounts, while other plans are used for smaller business owners that need only a bare minimum of services.

(AP) ? The Senate's Republican leader said Sunday he is reserving judgment on whether to support former Sen. Chuck Hagel, the front-runner to be the next defense secretary, and predicted that his former colleague would face serious question about his stands on Iran and Israel.

President Barack Obama, who returned to the White House on Sunday after his vacation in Hawaii, may round out his new national security leadership team this coming week, with a nomination for Pentagon chief expected and a pick to lead the Central Intelligence Agency possible.

A congressional aide said Senate Democrats have been given a heads-up from the White House that Hagel's selection is imminent. The aide was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said any defense nominee must have "a full understanding of our close relationship with our Israeli allies, the Iranian threat, and the importance of having a robust military."

McConnell told ABC's "This Week" that Hagel, a Nebraska Republican who left the Senate in 2009, has "certainly been outspoken in foreign policy and defense over the years. The question we will be answering, if he's the nominee, is do his views make sense for that particular job?"

McConnell said he would "wait and see how the hearings go and see whether Chuck's views square with the job he would be nominated to do." He added: "I'm going to take a look at all the things that Chuck has said over the years and review that, and in terms of his qualifications to lead our nation's military."

The second-ranking Senate Republican, John Cornyn of Texas, said in a statement that making Hagel defense secretary would be "the worst possible message we could send to our friend Israel and the rest of our allies in the Middle East." Cornyn did not say he would try to block a Hagel nomination.

Obama, in an interview that aired last Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" called Hagel "a patriot" who "has done extraordinary work" in the Senate and on an intelligence advisory board.

Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, the second-ranking Senate Democrat, told CNN's "State of the Union" that Hagel "is a serious candidate if the president chooses to name him."

Hagel has criticized discussion of a military strike by either the U.S. or Israel against Iran. He also has backed efforts to bring Iran to the table for talks on future peace in Afghanistan. Some lawmakers have been troubled by his comments and actions on Israel, including his reference to the "Jewish lobby" in the United States.

"This is a controversial pick," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., told CNN. "He is an antagonistic figure when it comes to the state of Israel. It's a signal you're sending to Iran at the worst possible time and to our allies."

Obama has nominated Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., as his next secretary of state, in what was the president's first step in filling out his second term Cabinet and national security team.

Kerry, as well as the nominees for the Pentagon and CIA, must be confirmed by the Senate.

Debt-limit fight takes shape: Won't Republicans ever be happy?

Remember the "fiscal cliff" ? that Armageddon of spending cuts and tax hikes that threatened the send the US economy back to the age of stone tools and woolly mammoth pelts? Well, if Washington is to be believed, that was just a warmup act.

The latest word from inside the Beltway is that Republicans are girding themselves for a fight on what might be called the Fiery Chasm of Fiscal Doom:

  • America will bump up against the debt ceiling, which allows the federal government to borrow more money, next month.
  • The "sequester" spending cuts to defense and domestic spending outlined in the 2011 debt-ceiling deal ? and postponed by the fiscal cliff deal ? come due on Feb. 28.
  • The stopgap bill that allows the federal government to function despite still not having a 2013 budget expires March 27.

Recommended: How much do you know about US entitlement programs? Take our quiz.

Republicans say they will not raise the debt limit unless the increase is offset by spending cuts. President Obama says he won't allow Republicans to hold the debt limit hostage and won't play ball. Behind the scenes, there are rumors of a "grand bargain" that could tie up all the outstanding issues in a nice bow.

Stop us when this sounds familiar.

So why does Congress lurch from crisis to crisis, seemingly propelled by the Republicans' demand to take a pound (or more) of spending flesh at every turn?

Get our FREE 2013 Global Security Forecast now

Actually, the answer is quite simple ? and, at its core, it is not a matter of political posturing or point-winning, however often it devolves into that. The cause is Congress's continued unwillingness to deal with Medicare, Social Security, and the Pentagon.

The fact is, despite all the hubbub of the past two years, the federal government has still not made any meaningful spending cuts. And that is mostly because meaningful spending cuts are virtually impossible without addressing entitlements or the Department of Defense.

Congress and the president tried to do just that in the 2011 debt-ceiling deal, yet the fiscal cliff deal shows that Washington, when faced with such cuts, apparently doesn't have the stomach to let them take effect.

So Republicans sent to Washington specifically to rein in government spending have next to nothing to show for it. And the mounting fear is that they might never have anything to show for it ? that the classic Washington inertia to do nothing is slowly consuming the energy of the 2010 tea party revolution.

As a result, some Republicans are growing increasingly desperate. They believe that Congress will never get serious about bringing its spending into line unless it is in crisis. So better to manufacture one now, and solve the problem, they say, then to let things linger and eventually become Greece.

At the same time, Washington knows that responsible, long-term fiscal planning cannot move forward until spending is brought under control ? it's just that the prospect of entitlement reform or Pentagon cuts are so politically unsavory that the day of reckoning is postponed again and again.

But signs are that it is coming. Credit-rating agency Moody?s has said ?the US's credit rating could be affected ?negatively? if Washington fails to take further steps to rein in the deficit.? All parties know the US cannot risk further downgrades to its credit rating.

Moreover, a recent Politico poll found that 75 percent of Americans wanted to rein in deficits by cutting government spending "across the board" (though other polls have shown Americans unsupportive of changes to Medicare and Social Security).

Of course, the Republicans' kamikaze approach to entitlement cuts (with little scrutiny of the Pentagon budget) is not the only option. Reportedly, fiscal cliff talks brought Mr. Obama and House Speaker John Boehner (R) of Ohio close to a grand bargain that would have included $900 billion in spending cuts ? including $600 billion in entitlement reform. But Obama wanted a significant amount of tax revenue in addition to these cuts ? more than Mr. Boehner could countenance.

And that appears to be the issue going forward. Obama wants more tax revenue to accompany any entitlement reform, probably in the form of limiting tax breaks. Boehner and Republicans say they gave Obama tax revenue in the fiscal cliff deal but got no spending cuts, meaning now is the time for cuts alone.

But the deeper point is that, with health-care expenses rising and America's baby boomer population putting stresses on Medicare and Social Security, entitlement reform appears inevitable. Congress's current cycle of crisis, then, appears merely to be the way that Washington comes a difficult decision in an age of red state bloggers, blue state pundits, and disgruntled Americans in the middle.
