New discovery shines light on the three faces of neutrinos

ScienceDaily (Mar. 8, 2012) ? A new discovery provides a crucial key to understanding how neutrinos -- ghostly particles with multiple personalities -- change identity and may help shed light on why matter exists in the universe.

In an announcement Thursday, March 8, members of the large international Daya Bay collaboration reported the last of three measurements that describe how the three types, or flavors, of neutrinos blend with one another, providing an explanation for their spooky morphing from one flavor to another, a phenomenon called neutrino oscillation.

The measurement makes possible new experiments that may help explain why the present universe is filled mostly with matter, and not equal parts of matter and antimatter that would have annihilated each other to leave behind nothing but energy. One theory is that a process shortly after the birth of the universe led to the asymmetry, but a necessary condition for this is the violation of charge-parity (or CP) symmetry. If neutrinos and their antimatter equivalent, antineutrinos, oscillate differently, this could provide the explanation.

"The result is very exciting, because it essentially allows us to compare neutrino and antineutrino oscillations in the future and see how different they are and hopefully have an answer to the question, Why do we exist?" said Kam-Biu Luk, a professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley, and a faculty scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). Luk is co-spokesperson of the experiment and heads the U.S. participation in this collaboration.

Researchers knew that if the observed third kind of oscillation were zero or near zero, it would make further study of matter-antimatter asymmetry difficult.

"This is a new type of neutrino oscillation, and it is surprisingly large," said Yifang Wang of China's Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP), who is the co-spokesperson and Chinese project manager of the Daya Bay experiment. "Our precise measurement will complete the understanding of the neutrino oscillation and pave the way for the future understanding of matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe."

"Berkeley has played a key role since day one in the Daya Bay experiment, one of the biggest experimental particle physics collaborations ever between the U.S. and China," said Graham Fleming, UC Berkeley vice chancellor for research. "The large value of the mixing angle theta one-three from this experiment enables a very broad program of fundamental new physics including the proposed Long Baseline Neutrino experiment at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota."

The researchers have submitted a paper describing their results to the journal Physical Review Letters.

Using antineutrinos from Chinese nuclear reactors

The results come from the Daya Bay Reactor Antineutrino Experiment in Guangdong Province, China, near Hong Kong, which is a joint collaboration between scientists in the United States, China, the Czech Republic, Hong Kong, Russia and Taiwan. The U.S. institutions include UC Berkeley and LBNL, as well as Brookhaven National Laboratory, the University of Wisconsin and Caltech.

Nuclear power reactors at Daya Bay emit one kind or flavor of antineutrino -- electron antineutrinos -- that are identified in the six underground detectors. These detectors contain a liquid scintillator loaded with the element gadolinium. When the electron antineutrinos interact in the liquid, a blue glow is emitted.

Because some of the antineutrinos emitted by the reactors change flavor as they travel, the flux of electron antineutrinos measured in the detectors 1.7 kilometers from the reactor is less than the flux coming directly from the reactor and measured in the nearby detectors that are about 500 meters away. The deficit allowed scientists to determine the value of the so-called mixing angle (theta one-three, or ?13), the last to be measured of three mixing angles needed to interpret neutrinos' flavor-changing behavior.

"Although we're still two detectors shy of the complete experimental design, we've had extraordinary success in detecting the number of electron antineutrinos that disappear as they travel from the reactors to the detectors nearly two kilometers away," Luk said.

Neutrinos interact so weakly with other types of matter that they can pass through Earth as if it were not there. Once thought to be fairly boring, with zero mass and always traveling at the speed of light, neutrinos have proved to be a major challenge to the Standard Model of particle physics. Experiments over the past two decades showed that neutrinos do have mass and change their identity as they oscillate between three flavors: electron, muon and tau.

Neutrinos' shifting personalities require them to have at least some mass -- probably less than one-millionth that of an electron -- because that is what causes their strange identity problem. Each flavor of neutrino is a mixture of three different masses that fluctuate with time. Just as a white light composed of red, green and blue shifts its tint as the proportions of each color change, so the type of a neutrino changes as the proportions of the masses oscillate.

"Once a neutrino starts to propagate in space, it's very hard to tell what its identity is until we remeasure it," as in the Baya Day experiment, Luk said.

Three numbers, called mixing angles, are part of the equations that describe these oscillations. The largest two were measured earlier in similar experiments -- including the KamLand collaboration, in which UC Berkeley and LBNL were active participants -- but with detectors set hundreds of kilometers from the neutrino source. The oscillation period associated with the third mixing angle was expected to be so small that a much shorter baseline experiment was needed, hence the Daya Bay collaboration. The six power reactors at Daya Bay and nearby Ling Ao yield millions of quadrillions of electron antineutrinos every second, of which the six detectors recorded tens of thousands between Dec. 24, 2011, and Feb. 17, 2012.

Daya Bay will complete the installation of the remaining two detectors this summer to obtain more data about neutrino oscillations. As a result, Daya Bay will continue to have an interaction rate higher than three competing experiments in France, South Korea and Japan , making it "the leading theta one-three experiment in the world," said William Edwards, a specialist in the physics department at UC Berkeley and LBNL and the U.S. project and operations manager for the Daya Bay experiment.

So You Think You Have Nothing to Say? - Writer?Interrupted

Last month I drove an hour and a half to my first speaking engagement. I knew this day would come. The day when I couldn?t just hide behind my computer screen. The day when I would have to take my writing on the road and share everything I?ve learned as a writer so far. And sell books.

Problem is I?m an introvert at heart. Yes, those who?ve met me at a conference might want to argue this point, but I?m not one to crave the spotlight or get up and speak to a group, though I am capable and have been known to do both. Yes, even sometimes I confuse myself with my introvert-extrovert tendencies!

I guess I don?t mind speaking when I?m passionate about the topic. And writing is one thing I?m passionate about, but WHAT could I possible speak on? As a creative writing teacher to grade schoolers and teens, I know how to talk to them. Practically anything I say is brilliant. But to a room of my peers? What could I offer that they haven?t heard before?

Then I remembered I have years of speaking material on my blog. Just this year I learned how to cut my WIP from 56,000 to 21,000. Surely, I could teach others how to do the same. So I will, tomorrow!

The thought of speaking to a group may terrify some, for me, it?s just a necessary progression of this writerly life. Others like me, just have no idea how to start the speaking phase of their career. To you I say, you?re already speaking and people are listening.

Search your blog archives. Find the subjects people respond to. They could be on the craft or simply encouragement in the writing life. Look at your written words in a new and fresh way. Maybe they weren?t just meant to be read. Maybe they were meant to be spoken!

The difference Amongst Investing Stocks And Stock Choices | Smart ...

Inside the stock current market marketplace, the trade for shares and stock options are frequently interchanged and many could be puzzled in between the ideas powering these kinds of trades. Nevertheless, everything you must know is always that these two have pretty various qualities from one another, and working with them interchangeably can be quite deadly in order for you to have interaction in the stock investing match.

Understanding the main difference amongst these two wouldn?t only help save you on generating considerable trading faults, but maybe, you may be guided on making a wise business selection on which unique trade you?ll in fact desire to make your march madness picks investments.

Shares Vs . Stock Choices

By definition, shares are actually shares of the distinct company that can be traded through the act of obtaining or offering by an investor. In the event you come about to individual a selected stock from the firm, you are entitled to selected legal rights, which can involve a revenue share from earnings. You may additionally have the liberty to sell your share of stock in the event you no more drive it.

A stock option then again, is not the stock or share on the company itself, however it is actually the rights to get a sure stock. It in fact enables you to buy and sell provider stock at a set price within a certain period of time. Nevertheless, you don?t achieve the income from your provider by itself.

Get notice that in carrying out transactions for Sc2 stock selections, there will constantly be considered a purchaser plus a vendor, which might not normally hold correct when compared to shares. If you sell stock possibilities, you will be in fact making a specific diploma of security to the business together with for on your own. In this particular way, the get-togethers involved can make certain that cash is in fact built for the frequent trade that takes place.

Evaluating The advantages

In comparing the advantages of best stocks for 2012 and stock alternatives, quite a few industry experts would declare that stock selections could be a promising risk for organizations and people, primarily when you?ve got adequate expertise while in the buying and selling activity and might significantly use excellent strategies to survive. On the other hand, the very same benefits may not be anticipated for anyone who is only a starter.

What tends to make many professionals desire options trading is normally because with this unique trade, it doesn?t matter what would occur on the underlying safety, a choice customer cannot eliminate to much more than that on the preliminary value paid out for that rights. The Blue Planet's new water budget: Do we have enough?

ScienceDaily (Mar. 5, 2012) ? Investigating the history of water on Earth is critical to understanding the planet's climate. One central question is whether Earth has always had the same amount of water on and surrounding it, the same so-called "water budget." Has Earth gained or lost water from comets and meteorites? Has water been lost into space? New research into Earth's primordial oceans conducted by researchers at the Natural History Museum of Denmark at the University of Copenhagen and Stanford University revisits Earth's historical water budget.

The results have just been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Water accounts for about ? of a thousandth of Earth's total mass, despite the fact that roughly 70% of the planet's surface is covered by this substance so vital to survival. Indeed, water is a relatively "rare substance" on our "Blue Planet."

Where does water come from?

"One of the absolutely most intriguing things about Earth is that there are oceans of water and that the presence of liquid water has enabled the existence of life on Earth. Therefore, questions concerning how Earth got its oceans, where the water came from and -- whether we are losing or gaining water from space -- are fundamental questions in the understanding of the Earth's history," says Emily Pope of the Nordic Center for Earth Evolution at the Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen.

Earth's "little bit" of water is divided among a variety of reservoirs. Therefore, a fairly accurate assessment of how much water currently exists on Earth can be made. But now, Emily Pope and her colleagues at the Natural History Museum of Denmark and Stanford University have also been able to determine that liquid water was also in existence upon the young Earth, billions of years ago. And, more consequentially, they have been able to approximate the ancient water budget.

The researchers have done this by examining 3.8 billion year old minerals from Greenland which are derived from Earth's primordial oceans.

A "minor" loss

"We have managed to reconstruct the isotopic composition of 3.8 billion-year-old seawater using mineral samples from the Isua-rocks in Greenland. The results demonstrate that the young planet's oceans, in relation to those of today, had proportionately more "normal water" than "heavy water" in them. We can explain this difference by the fact that Earth has lost less than ? of its water budget over the last roughly 4 billion years," says Pope.

It may sound like a lot of liquid, but it's a surprise for researchers that Earth's water budget has been so relatively stable for so many years. The new findings concerning the historical development of oceans also support new theories and suggested solutions to "the faint young Sun paradox." Theories challenging the paradox were propounded by a number of researchers from the Natural History Museum of Denmark and Stanford in 2010.

About the faint early Sun paradox

In 1972, the late, world renowned astronomer and his colleague, George Mullen, formulated "the faint early Sun paradox." The paradox addressed the relative stability of Earth's climate over the 4.5 billion years of its existence in relation to the fact that during the same period, solar radiation has increased by 25-30 percent.

The paradoxical question that arose from the scientists was why Earth's surface, during the planet's infancy, was not covered by ice, when the sun's rays were much weaker than they are today. One possible solution to the paradox, among others, was proposed by the American atmospheric researcher Jim Kasting in 1993. He performed theoretical calculations which showed that 4 billion-years-ago, 30 percent of the Earths atmosphere was composed of CO2. The theory was that the impact of this large amount of greenhouse gas insulated the planet and prevented the oceans from freezing over.

An abundance of atmospheric CO2 however, was not the ice-limiting factor. Instead, a much thinner layer of cloud played a major role in keeping ice at bay. Furthermore, Earth was covered by ocean. This meant that the Sun's relatively unimpeded rays could warm the massive ocean which in turn could store heat and prevent the freezing of its surface, according to the research group from University of Copenhagen and Stanford. This is their current answer to the long-standing riddle.
