Women engineers trace tech gender gap to childhood

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Silicon Valley companies portray themselves as inventors of the future, but they're afflicted by a longstanding problem.

From board rooms to "brogrammers," men still dominate many corners of the tech industry, where the pantheon of famous founders ? from Hewlett and Packard to Jobs to Zuckerberg ? is still a boys' bastion.

The gender-imbalance issue came to the forefront again recently when a partner at the country's most prominent venture capital firm filed a sexual harassment lawsuit alleging a former colleague retaliated against her for years after she cut off a brief relationship with him. The firm, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, has denied the allegations.

Whatever the merits of the claim, the suit again has put a spotlight on the tech industry's gender gap.

To Jocelyn Goldfein, a director of engineering at Facebook, the math is stark.

Less than 20 percent of the bachelor's degrees in computer science go to women, according to federal statistics. By comparison, nearly 60 percent of all bachelor's degrees are awarded to graduating females.

The company wants to hire top engineers, but the talent pool in the U.S. is growing thin, she said. Goldfein said she doesn't look to hire female engineers specifically, just the best people. But she said she'd have a lot more to choose from if women entered computer science at a rate anywhere near the average for all fields.

She blames the lack of role models both in popular culture and in day-to-day life as a key reason for the disparity.

"The reason there aren't more women computer scientists is because there aren't more women computer scientists," she said.

Women in other professions such as medicine and law have become fixtures on television and in movies in recent decades, while portrayals of programmers still tend to follow the hacker stereotype of the lone guy sitting in his basement, she said.

Unless their parents are engineers, girls also aren't likely to encounter coders in their own lives the same way they would, for example, a doctor or a teacher.

"We don't really have that same kind of interaction with software engineers as we go about our daily lives," Goldfein said.

Facebook itself has come under criticism over the lack of diversity on its board of directors, which is composed of seven white men, though the majority of its users are women. At the same time, the company's chief operating officer, former U.S. Treasury Department official Sheryl Sandberg, has become the most prominent female executive in Silicon Valley.

Goldfein said women engineers are also behind many of Facebook's signature features, including the news feed and the photo viewer. She hopes the site itself can serve as a tool to draw more girls and young women into computer science.

"If they realize that when I click on a photo and it pops up, that was made by a woman, think how powerful that would be," Goldfein said.

At gatherings across Silicon Valley, especially those where engineers cluster, lines extend far out the men's room door, while the ladies' room has little wait.

"Sometimes it can be hard," said Serena Yeung, 23, a recent Stanford graduate who worked as a software engineer at a Silicon Valley startup before returning for graduate school. Just walking into the classroom is one of the biggest hurdles for women thinking of entering the field, she said. "You go in and you're the only girl in it."

For Yeung, having parents who were both engineers spared her the sense that computers weren't for girls.

She got her first job as a programmer at Mountain View-based Rockmelt Inc., which makes a Web browser with built-in social media features. She started working there even before she graduated with her degree in electrical engineering, another coding-intensive field where men heavily outnumber women.

Rockmelt CEO Eric Vishria says the competition to hire qualified women software engineers has heated up as companies see that they need diverse perspectives to build products that attract the widest audience. He said startups that don't hire women early in their existence risk creating a male-dominated culture that will put off potential female hires.

"It becomes a death spiral, it becomes self-fulfilling," Vishria said. "You have 15 guys in a room, that's your company, and it becomes harder and harder to hire your first woman."

Yeung said a recent experience at a Stanford Society of Women Engineers event for elementary school students showed her that intervention needs to come early to steer girls toward tech. She said girls who had just come from a computer science workshop complained they didn't like it because the boys asked all the questions.

Steeped in video game culture and barraged by positive male tech industry role models, boys tend to dominate conversations around computing early on, leaving girls feeling shut out, said Yeung.

As for her own childhood, Yeung said that as she got older, her commitment to computing carried a social cost as female friends drifted toward other interests.

"It's harder to spend time with them. It's harder to do things with them," she said. "I think you feel kind of a conflicting pull between friends and career interests. That can be hard."

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) ? The Vietnamese government says it will open three new sites for excavation by the U.S. to search for troop remains from the war.

The announcement from Vietnam's defense minister comes as U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and his Vietnamese counterpart exchanged artifacts collected during the war. They include letters written by an American soldier who was killed that had been kept and used as propaganda. There's also a small red diary kept by a Vietnamese soldier. A U.S. service member took the journal home.

U.S. officials say this is the first time such a joint exchange of war artifacts has occurred. The two defense leaders agreed to return the papers to the families of the deceased soldiers.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? This is no ordinary friendship ? or concert tour.

When country superstars Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw kick off their highly anticipated 22-city stadium tour Saturday in Tampa, it will be the high point of their careers and friendship.

The two men met at a bar in Nashville more than 20 years ago. Chesney had just moved to the city and didn't know anyone. McGraw had a record contract but had yet to put out a single.

McGraw joked in an interview at Raymond James Stadium on Friday that they would hang out at each other's apartments "depending on who had paid the electric bill that month."

"That's not a lie," Chesney added.

Neither dreamed they would ever headline a tour, much less enter territory attempted by very few music acts of any genre as they co-headline this tour together. Today they are two of country music's top draws and by combining forces on "The Brothers of the Sun" tour they're launching what some are calling country music's biggest tour ever.

"You don't dream that," said Chesney, pointing at the enormous stage inside the stadium. "I just wanted a song on the radio."

Added McGraw: "We wanted to have big careers. We wanted to go out and set the world on fire. But you know, in the back of your mind, you always think, 'If I could just get a hit song, I'd be happy.'"

The tour, which also includes Grace Potter & The Nocturnals and Jake Owen, is so much more than a hit song or even your usual arena show. It's comprised of three complete stage systems, 85 tractor-trailers, 240 roadies and two culinary staffs, according to tour manager Ed Wannebo, who spoke to the media Friday as McGraw and Chesney joked and whispered in each other's ears nearby like schoolboys.

The tour ? and especially the stage set ? "consumed" Chesney. It started with ideas scrawled on "a pen and napkin" and planning and preparation began months ago.

"Building that," Chesney said while pointing to the stage, "There's a lot that goes into it. I have my hands on basically everything on that stage, the way it looks, the way it moves, everything. That's just the way I am. I'm very hands-on. I care what it looks like, because I want to give the fans the best possible experience."

McGraw said he and Chesney initially wanted to do just a couple of large shows, but the plan grew. The first show in Tampa is sure to be a large one; when Chesney played there in 2011, he drew 50,548 fans.

Each performer will have his own set and the pair, who released the dual single "Feel Like a Rock Star" in anticipation of the tour, will join together to top off the night. Potter will likely join Chesney for a rendition of their steamy hit "You and Tequila." And McGraw, fresh off a new deal with Big Machine Records, will unveil news songs he's been working on for his next album.

"You try to entertain the last guy that you see in the very top row back there," McGraw said. "Make him feel special, make him feel like his money was worth it."

Top-ranked players race the clock at French Open

PARIS (AP) ? On a busy day of tennis at the French Open, the top-ranked man and woman were left racing against the clock.

Because of a few long matches and a bit of a backlog from the previous day, both Novak Djokovic and Victoria Azarenka were late on court Friday and both completed third-round victories just as the sun was setting.

"Last 15 minutes was very hard," said Djokovic, who beat Nicolas Devilder of France 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. "It was very important for me to finish the match today. I wouldn't like to come back tomorrow and play a few games."

Azarenka's match was quicker, and ended a few minutes earlier. She defeated Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada 6-4, 6-4.

"I'm really glad I managed to finish today because it was already pretty dark in last two games," said Azarenka, who took over the No. 1 ranking after winning the Australian Open.

Roger Federer also advanced to the fourth round, despite being stretched to four sets for the second straight match. Maria Sharapova made it into the third round, but both third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska and 2008 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic were eliminated.

On Saturday, Sharapova will be back on court for her third-round match, while defending champion Rafael Nadal and fourth-seeded Andy Murray will also be trying to reach the fourth round.

Djokovic was scheduled to play Friday in the fourth match on Court Suzanne Lenglen. But with Sharapova's postponed match ahead of his, and a five-setter in which Stanislas Wawrinka eliminated No. 11 Gilles Simon, the top-seeded Serb didn't begin 7:48 p.m.

He didn't waste any time against Devilder, but it still took him 1 hour, 44 minutes to win, with match point coming at 9:32 p.m.

"When I saw the schedule last night, I expected a long match between Simon and Wawrinka," Djokovic said. "Not that long, but long."

With the win, Djokovic extended his Grand Slam win streak to 24 matches. The 25-year-old Serb has won the last three Grand Slam titles, and he needs four more victories at Roland Garros to become the third player to hold all four major titles at the same time. Rod Laver was the last to do it, in 1969.

His next opponent will be Andreas Seppi of Italy.

"He's in best form I think in his life and won a tournament in Belgrade. So he's very famous in Serbia," joked Djokovic, whose family runs that event. "I think half of Serbia will support Seppi, no, because of winning the trophy."

Azarenka also had to worry about the descending night in her match, which finished at 9:29. Her match had been scheduled to start after Djokovic, but it was switched to Court 1.

"They wanted to move us to Court 2. Then didn't decide. Then wanted to move to Chatrier," Azarenka said. "So it was a little bit of a hustle.

"I managed to play, so that's important."

Federer didn't have to worry about the time, but he may have to worry about his game after needing four sets to beat Nicolas Mahut of France 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.

"I think for bigger guys it's about, if you're able to move them around enough and they have to defend time and time again, this is maybe where you can expose some of their weaknesses potentially," Federer said. "I thought he did well. (I) struggled a little bit, but overall obviously I'm happy I came through."

For Sharapova, it was a second straight rout. Three days after winning with a "double bagel," the second-seeded Russian defeated Ayumi Morita of Japan 6-1, 6-1.

Sharapova has won three major titles in her career, but she still needs to win at Roland Garros to complete a career Grand Slam.

"With every round I'm going to be playing tougher opponents, and that's when you really want to kind of step it up and raise your level," Sharapova said. "That's what I'll try to do in the next round."
