Sophie Egan: Graduation: The Loneliest Day

A Letter to My Fellow Graduates of the Great Recession

It's supposed to be like your wedding day or the birth of a child: blissful. Life-affirming. There are flags and robes and sashes, hugs and cheers and high fives, the band playing its jubilant heart out. Family members in all directions -- wearing huge smiles. Scores of volunteers passing out food and programs and telling everyone where to sit to witness the culmination of all your hard work, to send you off to achieve something historic, become someone unforgettable. But I have never felt less like celebrating.

I was jobless, hopeless, and utterly unprepared to be flung off my campus bike and into a desk chair. It was June 2009, and, like you, I confronted the worst economy in decades.

It seemed to come out of nowhere, this now-you're-an-adult business. Not the register-to-vote-because-now-your-opinion-matters-in-society kind of adult, or the toast-to-legal-happy-hour-whenever-you-feel-like-it kind of adult. This time we really mean it. We mean the look-yourself-in-the-eye-and-figure-out-what-you're-going-to-do-with-your-time-on-earth kind of adult.

The night before commencement, I sat on my couch for hours, paralyzed. I understood how lucky I was to have spent four years at Stanford, and I'd gotten more out of that time than anybody could ask for. Of course it was only fair to step aside and give a new batch of students a turn. Yet I couldn't handle it ending because, for the first time, I had no idea where I was going next.

Like you, I am a member of the trophies-for-all generation. I felt as if I had been on a rocket ship my whole life, told I could do anything I put my mind to, and then -- suddenly -- I was freefalling.

I woke in the morning still on the couch and slowly began to face the music. I stared at my image in the mirror and tried to navigate my cap to a reasonably attractive slant. Concluding that no such slant exists on those things, I gave up. I zipped up the flowery blue dress I simultaneously realized I hated, and started the long walk to the stadium, alone.

Everyone else wore their robes, giddily playing with the folds of the fabric, yet I carried mine. Putting it on meant this was really happening.

Everyone else looked deliriously happy, yet it felt like a march to my beheading. Don't they realize we're getting kicked out of here?

My mom and brother appeared at the stadium entrance to hand me an orchid lei, and I joined friends inside. The baking turf and surge of pomp made my head swell and stomach ache. Now sweating in my billowy black oven, I couldn't wait to get out of there.

I felt bad for feeling bad when I noticed after the ceremony how hard my parents were working to make me see the moment for what it was. In a deluge of beaming relatives, all I saw were wilting orchids dropping from the string pinching my neck.

I tried to put on a smile for them, but simply could not gain a healthy perspective. And for an embarrassingly long time, I still couldn't.

Three years later, I can now laugh at my melodrama, and at events from that day, like briefly losing my grandmother only to learn she had wandered off to another department's lunch buffet to stuff her purse. As many a 20-something can tell you, though, leaving college in the Great Recession is no joke.

As they say, it got worse before it got better -- the countless cover letters sent into the digital abyss, the self-doubt, the adjustment to living at home at 22, the mind-numbing first job I landed after many frustrating months.

Like you already have or soon will, I eventually found my footing (right around the time I gave away that flowery blue dress, which I never wore again).

It's nice to finally see that adulthood is -- surprise! -- actually a lot of fun. Far more fun than I could allow myself to imagine on the day I grudgingly exited lalaland through a tunnel of balloons.

Why Romney can?t quit Trump

Top Line

Mitt Romney has crossed the threshold, gathering the majority of delegates in last night's Texas primary. And to celebrate this moment in his trajectory to the Republican nomination, Romney chose to stand onstage at a Las Vegas fundraiser ... with Donald Trump.

Trump is still embracing "birther" theories, saying that President Obama was not born in the United States, despite the fact that the Obama administration has clearly proven he was. Romney appearing with Trump is?a revealing moment in how the Rommey campaign thinks about the general election. Team Romney thinks that even now -- with the primary battle in the rear view mirror -- there is a danger in alienating someone like Donald Trump -- the campaign doesn't know what he might do on the outside, and it does not know what people who agree with Trump might do with their support.

But the Romney campaign is no longer just wooing Republican base voters, it is in the hunt for those crucial independents, too. So why cater to the Donald? Check out this week's Top Line to find out.

At least 16 die as 5.8-magnitude earthquake hits Italy

Police and rescue crews are searching for survivors trapped under rubble in northern Italy where a 5.8 magnitude earthquake has left at least 15 people dead. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.

By msnbc.com news services

Updated at 4:10 p.m. ET: MILAN, Italy --?An earthquake struck northern Italy on Tuesday, killing at least 16 people, damaging buildings and spreading panic among thousands of residents still living in tents after a tremor shook the region just over a week ago.

The 5.8 magnitude quake left 14,000 people homeless in the Emilia Romagna region north of Bologna, one of Italy's most agriculturally and industrially productive areas.

A volunteer helps people evacuate the Tesoreria Comunale and Marino Palace offices in downtown Milan after Tuesday's earthquake.

The United States Geological Survey said the quake, which struck at 9:00 a.m. local time (3 a.m. ET), was centered 25 miles northwest of Bologna and was felt across much of northern and central Italy.

Some 350 were injured and one person is still missing, The Associated Press reported.

"The situation is very serious, some people are stuck under the rubble," Alberto Silvestri, the mayor of San Felice sul Panaro, one of the towns near the epicenter, told SkyTG24.

Prime Minister Mario Monti said: "I want to assure everyone that the state will do all that it must do, all that is possible to do, as fast as it can to guarantee the return to normality in a region so special, so important, so productive for Italy."?

A young girl runs outside tents housing people made homeless in a May 20 earthquake in northern Italy. Another deadly quake hit the area on Tuesday.

The earthquake was felt from Piedmont in northwestern Italy to Venice in the northeast and as far north as Austria. Dozens of aftershocks hit the area, some registering more than 5.0 in magnitude.

The temblor terrified many of the thousands who have been living in tents or cars since the May 20 quake and created a whole new wave of homeless. ?Seven people were killed in the earlier quake.

"I was shaving and I ran out very fast, half dressed," a resident of Sant'Agostino, one of the towns devastated in the quake earlier this month, told AP Television News.?

That quake destroyed hundreds of buildings, including ancient churches and castles, and forced more than 7,000 people to sleep outdoors in tents.

An 6.0 earthquake caused a violent tremor in Italy on Sunday, destroying historic buildings, including a cathedral. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

It also hit production of some of the area's most internationally famous produce, including Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. Farmers estimated the damage to agriculture in one of Italy's most fertile zones at more than 200 million euros (around $251 million).

While Tuesday's quake was about 100 times less intense than the one May 20, its death toll was more than twice as high.

People trapped under rubble
On Tuesday, officials said operations to rescue people from the rubble had been hampered by disruption to the mobile phone network.?

"The town has been largely damaged. There are people under the rubble, we don't know how many," a police officer from Cavezzo told Reuters.

Train services around Bologna, near Modena, were disrupted, media said, and schools and other public buildings had been evacuated as far south as Florence.

"We felt a very strong tremor," said Raffaella Besola, a resident of Bologna.

Television footage on ITV News showed evacuees from the previous quake peering out of shaking tents in disbelief.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Current coming from a ground wire in the manner of the TK video's is impossible
Is it? Found this buried on p.59 and p.758: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJ36EtABLAk

Charging by induction, narrator:

?The ground allows electrons to enter from the earth. [...] It [charging by induction] occurs when a charged object is used to charge a neutral one without discharging itself. [...] The rod can be used to charge any number of electroscopes.?

So, essentially the energy stored in all the charged electroscopes comes from earth!

Let's see: Replace the charged rod with a helical coil (important is not magnetic, but electrostatic field), which charge and discharge itself (instead to move it back and forward) a few thousand times a second (with the aid of a spark gap). Replace the electroscope with an oscillating circuit of coils connected to lamps and ground (properly synchronized to the induction field). What happens? Could it happen that we get, say, 200.000 fully charged ?electroscopes? (in shape of a coil) each second? That would be a lot of electrons to play around with, especially when they are already located in a transformer coil.

Thinking this over, it would be rather surprising if this approach is NOT going to work.

Report: U.S is trying to convince Russia to remove Syrian President Bashar Alassad and to keep his government

May 27, 2012 ? Middle East Post

pb-120326-obama-medvedev-ps.photoblog900

New York Times reported today that U.S President Obama is making an effort to remove Bashar Alassad while his government stays in its place for a period. The suggested plan is similar to the model that was used in Yemen where former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh left the chair command and his deputy took control.

The U.S suggested plans includes reaching an agreement with the opposition in Syria that would allow elections later and put an end for the Syrian President Bashar control of the country. The plan?s success depends on Russia?s cooperation and agreement on it since the latter has blocked any UN Security Council action against Al-Assad until now.

Russia refused any military action against Syria and considers it a main ally in the region. Not only that, but the Russian leadership have stated several times that it will not allow an end for the Syrian President that is similar to what happened to former Libyan President Muammar Qaddafi.

In the G8 meeting President Obama suggested the plan to Russian Prime Minister Medvedev that did not seem to refuse it. However, a Russian agreement on such a plan is not easy to get especially that Syria is Moscow?s main Middle East ally and is used for the Russian naval bases.

I certainly don't mean to hijack the thread, but I do feel I should mention to you that your choice for looking for Windows should be justified by what you're looking to do with the server.

Rule of thumb: Don't use Windows unless your software specifically requires it.

ANA Endorses President Barack Obama's Re-Election Bid

The American Nurses Association?this week announced its endorsement of President Barack Obama for re-election.

"Increasing access to care and transforming the American healthcare system from one that focuses on illness care to a system that emphasizes prevention, wellness, and care coordination have been ANA's priorities for more than two decades," said ANA President Karen A. Daley, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN.?"ANA remains committed to supporting President Obama's efforts to fully implement and fund the Affordable Care Act."??

According to ANA, the Obama administration has consistently supported the nursing profession by appointing nurses to key leadership positions and creating new opportunities for nurses to deliver care through community health centers and school-based health centers.

The president has also supported nursing workforce programs, which include nurse faculty education and expanding loan repayment and scholarship programs.

"The Obama administration values nurses' expertise and understands that nurses need to practice to the full extent of their education, training, and licensure in order to fulfill the vision of healthcare reform," Daley said.?"We're honored to have the support of the American Nurses Association, and we look forward to working with them throughout the campaign," said Jim Messina, Obama for America campaign manager.

"President Obama believes affordable, reliable health insurance is an important part of middle-class security. He refuses to go back to when health insurance companies had unchecked power to deny coverage when you get sick or charge women more than men simply because of their gender," Messina continued.

"Americans who work hard and pay their premiums deserve the security that comes with good healthcare - and America's nurses know that. With their help, we'll ensure that President Obama has another 4 years to continue implementing the landmark health reforms that are already helping millions of Americans save money and lead healthier lives."

ANA will connect members who wish to engage actively?in the president's re-election efforts with the campaign's?Nurses for Obama?group. ANA has members in all 50 states and all U.S. territories, and has been making endorsements of candidates for? president since 1984.

Irritable bowel syndrome linked to bacteria in gut

Friday, May 25, 2012

An overgrowth of bacteria in the gut has been linked to Irritable Bowel Syndrome in the results of a new Cedars-Sinai study which used cultures from the small intestine. This is the first study to use this "gold standard" method of connecting bacteria to the cause of the disease that affects an estimated 30 million people in the United States.

Previous studies have indicated that bacteria play a role in the disease, including breath tests detecting methane ? a byproduct of bacterial fermentation in the gut. This study was the first to make the link using bacterial cultures.

The study, in the current issue of Digestive Diseases and Sciences, examined samples of patients' small bowel cultures to confirm the presence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth ? or SIBO ? in more than 320 subjects. In patients with IBS, more than a third also were diagnosed with small intestine bacterial overgrowth, compared to fewer than 10 percent of those without the disorder. Of those with diarrhea-predominant IBS, 60 percent also had bacterial overgrowth.

"While we found compelling evidence in the past that bacterial overgrowth is a contributing cause of IBS, making this link through bacterial cultures is the gold standard of diagnosis," said Mark Pimentel, MD, director of the Cedars-Sinai GI Motility Program and an author of the study. "This clear evidence of the role bacteria play in the disease underscores our clinical trial findings, which show that antibiotics are a successful treatment for IBS."

IBS is the most common gastrointestinal disorder in the U.S., affecting an estimated 30 million people. Patients with this condition suffer symptoms that can include painful bloating, constipation, diarrhea or an alternating pattern of both. Many patients try to avoid social interactions because they are embarrassed by their symptoms. Pimentel has led clinical trials that have shown rifaximin, a targeted antibiotic absorbed only in the gut, is an effective treatment for patients with IBS.

"In the past, treatments for IBS have always focused on trying to alleviate the symptoms," said Pimentel, who first bucked standard medical thought more than a decade ago when he suggested bacteria played a significant role in the disease. "Patients who take rifaximin experience relief of their symptoms even after they stop taking the medication. This new study confirms what our findings with the antibiotic and our previous studies always led us to believe: Bacteria are key contributors to the cause of IBS."

Robert Pattinson all grown up in "Cosmopolis"

CANNES, France (AP) ? Going back to what he does best, David Cronenberg takes a visceral day-trip inside the cushioned limousine of a tycoon who cares little for the bloody, populist riots that explode outside his car in "Cosmopolis."

All the young multi-billionaire Eric Packer ? played by a steely-eyed Robert Pattinson ? wants is a haircut.

Packer spends the entire film, which premiered Friday in Cannes, crossing town to get one but is waylaid when the U.S. president's visit to the city causes traffic chaos. Yet when he eventually makes it to the barber, his haircut is interrupted and he leaves in futility, half-shaven.

For Cronenberg, a master of provocation, the significance of this probably goes beyond a debate on the quality of haircuts at barber shops ? though judging by Pattinson's slick red-carpet hair, it is probable he opted for a stylist.

In the surreal "Cosmopolis," ? full of long, introspective dialogue ? the portrayal of cold, moneyed arrogance is a warning against the perceived greed of current times.

The oversexed, 28-year-old Packer has made his billions as an asset manager in a dystopian Manhattan and is so self-obsessed he barely registers the violent protests against capitalism around him. The only time Packer seems worried is after a doctor tells him, in one of the movie's many comic moments, that he has an "asymmetrical prostate" ? with prostate-gazing an obvious synonym for navel-gazing.

Pattison ? who is most famous for playing a vampire in the teen "Twilight" series ? said he was nervous about the complex role.

"I spent two weeks in my hotel room worrying," he said, joking that "actors aren't meant to be intelligent."

But the ego and cynicism stretch beyond his character and infect the whole landscape.

The film starts with a quote: "a rat becomes the unit of currency," that turns out to be true for the movie's characters, who all seem to be part of a individualistic "rat race" each struggling to get his or her 15 minutes of fame.

The last scene sees a claustrophobic 22-minute face-off between Packer and a crazed man trying to assassinate him, played with standout brilliance by Paul Giamatti. The two talk on a couch, separated by a screen that Cronenberg said conjures up images of a Catholic confessional, exploring how selfish the world is.

Pattinson, whose past public appearances have caused mobs of teens to swoon, said he identified with the role, joking that he sometimes thinks "people are trying to kill me."

The film was based on a 2003 book by Don DeLillo, who was at the Cannes Film Festival alongside Cronenberg and said the film's dialogue was directly lifted from the novel. Still, at many points, the drawn-out dialogue seemed to have more elements of a play and the movie dragged.

At the post-screening press conference, Cronenberg justified with aplomb the film's introspective qualities. "For me, the essence of cinema is a person, a face, speaking."

Pattinson said he loves Cronenberg's other films ? which include the 2011 "A Dangerous Method" ? but the Canadian director said "I always had the feeling he'd never seen any of my movies."

The film has drawn inevitable comparisons to current financial woes and the timeless themes of greed vs. poverty and populist anger, but Cronenberg said any link to current affairs was accidental. Still, the shooting did coincide with global anti-capitalist protests that began in late 2011.

"(After filming) in the evenings, to read about the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations, it seemed at points that we were working more on a documentary," he said.

DeLillo said he wrote "Cosmopolis" after being struck by the massive gap between rich and poor in Manhattan.

"New York City streets at the turn of the century seemed suddenly filled up with white stretch limousines," he said.

People come to Cannes to dream, and this gritty, cynical film was seen by some Cannes revelers as a downer. So where was the hope?

"The hope is embodied in the fact that the movie got made in the first place," Cronenberg said with a dry smile. "It's not an easy movie to get financed. In Hollywood, $200 million is spent on movies that are extremely conservative, not-edgy. The hope is in the art."

Albany filmmaker raising funds for new film through Kickstarter - Arts ...

A screengrab from Justin Halstead's Kickstarter web page for "The Perfect Color."

Writer and director Justin Halstead is raising funds through Kickstarter for his short film ?The Perfect Color,? which he plans to shoot in Albany.

Halstead was inspired to start a campaign on Kickstarter, an online funding platform for creative projects, after reading a Times Union article about the dozens of feature films shown at the Tribeca Film Festival last month that were actually low-budget indie projects funded by Kickstarter.

The money raised with Kickstarter will go toward the basic needs of production. However, the production will only be funded if at least $15,000 is funded by 8:57 a.m Tuesday, Jun. 19 or else the project will loose all the money raised so far on the website.

?(The campaign) is going great locally,? Halstead said, ?As we gain momentum with Kickstarter we are hoping to gain more support from those who are not necessarily local.?

For every pledged donation, the production is offering incentives and ways to be involved in the project. Minimum pledges of $10 will receive a personal ?Thank You? letter signed by the producer, director and cast and the donor?s name will also appear in the credits as an official contributor.

So far the campaign has reached close to 30 percent of our final goal, said Halstead, Usually 90 percent of projects that reach this mark on Kickstarter get funded.

Halstead is co-producing the film with two other Albany natives Michael Fuerstein and Jimmy Arrant. All the workers for the production will be locals as well. Halstead has even recruited his past and current students from the New School Center for Media in Albany, where he teaches film, multimedia, and music video production.

?The Perfect Color? tells the story of Bill, a wannabe cowboy, who watches his beloved Cowgirl die on his seventh birthday. Bill becomes obsessed with finding someone or something as perfect as Cowgirl. Years later he meets Jane, a drug addict sleeping with his closest friend. Jane forces Bill to question whether or not to continue living in his black-and-white world or accept Jane as she is with all her imperfections.

While Halstead has written many features, and directed, produced and edited many shorts and music videos with his company Motor Visions Media, he hopes this film will be the next step in reaching a wider audience.

?None of this is for us, it?s all for our love of film,? Halstead said, ??Any small support, we welcome it.?

Is the third time the charm? OTA package for Verizon Galaxy Nexus now available from Google

G Nex

Another new month, another new OTA package for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus. For those that just want to get it on, here's the link direct from Google. Note that it's not a full ROM, and you'll need to be stock to flash it. Now where were we ...

This may play out like the last OTA update that mysteriously appeared, then just as quickly disappeared from Google's servers, but we're hearing that the OTA is pushing, so you might want to check your phone and see if it finds an update itself. Hopefully, this is the real deal and we can go from worrying about when the update will come and get back to complaining about the update like we're supposed to do. I kid, I kid.

For instruction on what to do if you're rooted and ROM'd, be sure to hit the Verizon G Nex forums and read a bit -- everything you want or need can be found there. Our fingers are crossed this time!

Thanks, JD!

Maintenance work shuts Starbucks across country

By NBC News and msnbc.com staff

Twitter.com

Thousands of tweets flooded Twitter lamenting a Starbucks-less Wednesday.

Bleary-eyed customers who stumble into their local Starbucks every morning did so literally Wednesday. That's because hundreds of the coffee chain's stores nationwide were closed.

The forced decaffeination of America's morning commuters was due to overnight maintenance work at stores across the country that wasn't finished on time for the morning rush, Maggie Jantzen, a spokeswoman for Starbucks, told NBC station WCMH of Columbus, Ohio.?

Jantzen said she didn't know how many stores were affected, but she said about 10 percent to 20 percent of the stores that were due for the work were unable to open on time.?

The company said the work was routine maintenance on a standardized water filtration system and that no safety issues were involved.

But because of it, stores were closed across the country ? as many as 1,500, mainly in the eastern half of the U.S., a quick tabulation of local news reports and hundreds of tweets by msnbc.com indicated. Coffee drinkers were left dripless from South Dakota to Florida, New York to Texas.

"I like to start my day with Starbucks, so I don't really know what to do," Kelly Furnet told NBC station WJXT as she stood outside a shuttered shop in Jacksonville, Fla.

"It's a huge problem because, in my office, people go there multiple times in a day for their coffee fix," Rebecca Stockdale, who works near one of the closed Starbucks in Columbus, told WCMH. "You can't have them coming to work without their caffeine!"

Show of NATO unity over unpopular Afghan war

US President Barack Obama and NATO allies put up a united front Sunday to persuade a war-weary public that the Afghan conflict will end in two years, as President Hamid Karzai vowed Afghanistan will no longer be a "burden."

Leaders of the 28 NATO nations stood in solemn silence as a bugler's lament recalled the heavy cost of a conflict that has killed over 3,000 coalition soldiers, maimed thousands more and left tens of thousands of Afghans dead.

As anti-war protesters clashed with police near the Chicago summit site, the two-day talks aimed to endorse a withdrawal strategy and seek firm commitments from allies to train and bankroll Afghan forces.

Before the summit Obama held talks with Karzai, three weeks after his dramatic trip to Kabul where the two leaders inked a security pact for going forward after the last 130,000 international troops withdraw in late 2014.

"We're confident that we are on the right track, and what this NATO summit reflects is that the world is behind the strategy that we've laid out," said Obama, who faces a tough re-election in November.

But in a sign of growing impatience within the alliance, new French President Francois Hollande refused to back down from his decision to pull troops out in 2012, a year earlier than planned.

"I told everyone I spoke with that this was not negotiable because it was a question of French sovereignty and everyone understood," he said, adding France would continue to train Afghan forces after 2012.

Karzai said his country no longer wanted to be a "burden," urging the international community to complete a security transition to his Afghan forces.

"Afghanistan... is looking forward to an end to this war and a transformational decade in which Afghanistan will be working further for institution building and the development of sound governance in the country," he said.

Along with reaffirming the 2014 deadline, the summit is expected to back Obama's plan to cede the lead in combat missions to Afghan troops next year, while making a commitment to securing $4 billion annually for Afghan forces.

"Once the Afghans have full responsibility by the end of 2014, our combat mission will come to an end but we will not walk away," assured NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

A Western official told AFP Sunday that nations with troops in Afghanistan had pledged roughly $1 billion to bankroll Afghan security forces after 2014. The bulk of the funding is expected to come from the United States.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari's attendance at the summit had raised hopes his government was ready to lift a blockade on NATO convoys, but talks on reopening the routes have stumbled over Islamabad's demand to charge steep fees for trucks crossing the border.

Zardari and leaders from some 30 other nations and international organizations will join the 28 NATO allies for Monday's second day of talks.

In a sign of the waning appetite for further conflict, Rasmussen said the western defense alliance "has no intention to intervene" in Syria despite concern at the bloodshed there.

"We strongly condemn the behavior of the Syrian security forces and their crackdowns on the Syrian population and we urge the Syrian leadership to accommodate the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people," he told reporters.

The summit in Obama's hometown went ahead under a massive security operation as normally bustling Chicago streets were deserted.

Boats with machine guns patrolled a river near Obama's hotel and police enforced a wide security perimeter around the conference center.

Thousands of protestors have taken to the streets in recent days calling for an end to war. Although the rallies have been largely peaceful, scuffles broke out Sunday when some hardcore demonstrators refused police orders to disperse.

The NATO talks come against a backdrop of a changing geopolitical landscape for the 63-year-old organization also grappling with shrinking defense budgets.

Leaders on Sunday launched the first phase of a US-led missile shield for Europe and sought to appease Russian anger over the system by renewing an invitation to cooperate.

Obama and fellow leaders also agreed on a slew of some 20 joint projects to pool military hardware as part of a so-called "Smart Defense" initiative.

Opposition groups report clashes in Syrian capital; top officials deny assassination claims

BEIRUT - A restive district of the Syrian capital that has been a hotbed of dissent against President Bashar Assad was rocked by fighting overnight between government forces and army defectors, opposition groups said Sunday.

The Local Coordination Committees and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the clashes took place in Kfar Souseh early Sunday morning but there were no immediate reports of casualties. The district is a high security area, housing the Foreign Ministry and several security and intelligence agencies. It has also been the scene of frequent anti-Assad demonstrations since the uprising began.

"Violent clashes broke out between rebel fighters and regime troops at a checkpoint in Kfar Souseh district," the Observatory said in a statement. Both the Observatory and LCC said explosions and gunfire were also heard in several other neighbourhoods of Damascus.

The revolt against Assad's regime started in March 2011 with mostly peaceful protests calling for political change. The deadly government crackdown led many opposition supporters to take up arms. Now, the regime is facing an armed insurgency targeting government installations, soldiers and security forces.

In March, the U.N. said that 9,000 people had been killed. Hundreds more have died since.

Also Sunday, Syrian rebels claimed in an Internet statement that they carried out a sophisticated attack that killed top political and security officials meeting in the capital. The posting claimed those killed included Maj. Gen. Assef Shawkat, the deputy chief of staff for security affairs; Defence Minister Dawoud Rajha; Interior Minister Mohammad al-Shaar and former defence minister, Hassan Turkmani.

Al-Shaar denied the reports in a phone call to state-run Syrian TV, saying they were "laughable."

"I am speaking to you from my office at the interior ministry," he said.

Turkmani also called the station and said the reports were proof of "media bankruptcy."

"My colleagues and I are well and carrying out our duty to serve the country ... these are blatant lies," he said. The station later interviewed Turkmani in his office, denying the claims.

Syrian officials rarely respond to claims and statements issued by the opposition and their quick denials on Sunday were unusual.

Clashes in the heart of the Syrian capital have become more common recently but are still rare compared to other opposition strongholds in Syria that witness deadly violence almost daily.

The Local Coordination Committees said "huge reinforcements" were brought in to Kfar Souseh in the wake of the overnight fighting.

A cease-fire that was supposed to start last month has never really taken hold, undermining the rest of international envoy Kofi Annan's plan, which is supposed to lead to talks to end the 15-month crisis.

World powers remain divided on how to end Syria's crisis. The U.S. and other Western and Arab nations have called for Assad to leave power, and the U.S. and European Union have placed increasingly stiff sanctions on Damascus. But with Russia and China blocking significant new U.N. punishments, U.S. officials are trying to get consensus among other allies about ways to promote Assad's ouster.

Visiting Annan deputy Jean-Marie Guehenno held talks Sunday with a three-man delegation from an opposition group inside Syria.

Abdul-Aziz al-Kheir, a spokesman for the National Coordination Body for Democratic Change in Syria, said the talks centred on implementing Annan's plan. He said his group demanded "a genuine and overall cease-fire" as the only path to a political process that could solve the crisis.

President Barack Obama said Saturday that the members of the Group of Eight industrial nations support the U.N.'s peace plan for Syria, but added that it has not taken hold fast enough.
